I recommend without hesitation the use of Lavender Spike Oil to modify paints or mediums while oil painting. Chelsea Classic Lavender Spike Oil Essence is great, with very high quality and clarity. It is a very nice substitute for the good old standby - Turp - but without the turp odor and its harmful VOCs. Spike Oil evaporates about as quickly as turp, and much quicker than OMS and with smoother solvent properties. (OMS is much too knife-sharp as a medium solvent, and slow.)My suggestion is to use Lavender Spike Oil to modify paints or mediums. Use citrus brush cleaner or Lavender Oil essence brush cleaner for your brushes, Safflower oil in your brush bath to preserve those brushes... and Chelsea Lavender Spike Oil for the painting process itself.And it smells great, too!

Love the smell it’s calming to me which is great because I color to alleviate my anxiety. I’m super sensitive to strong chemicals and this has been great.

I love this medium, it thins my paint while maintaining a thick texture with no beading like linseed oil. Glazing has never been easier; I’m so happy! This will always be a must have for the rest of my life! And it smells amazing!

This works great as a paint thinner, non-toxic and safe without any harmful carcinogens being inhaled. That is the major reason why I bought this, no worries about contaminating the environment or my health. However, the lavender scent is STRONG. I wore a mask, turned the fan on and cracked a window yet I still smelled the lavender and it triggered my asthma. It also made me really sleepy for some reason. I will have to paint in a separate room, leave my art supplies in there and close the door when I leave so the lavender smell does not permeate elsewhere and trigger me again.

I enjoyed the brush cleaner because it was natural and it made the verses feel really good but I found out that I needed to rinse them with warm water and soap afterward or else they get stiff but love the product.

I have used lavender spike oil for several years for oil painting and am quite satisfied with it. I like the smell, but it is still strong and will fill a house or studio. I feel it is probably safer than turpentine, but be aware if you have pets, especially cats, that lavender is toxic to them. Keep animals and little children in ventilated areas away from the spike oil, but this is just good practice with any oil painting materials. This is very nice to use when making your own mediums.

I give this ZERO stars, for which there was no choice option here. Purchased after seeing large numbers of positive reviews, but did not look further to find negatives. I found out after purchase that this product has a VERY powerful chemical (seemed noxious) odor, for which I smelled it for months (as I passed by the painting treated with it) hanging on the wall long after it dried. It did NOT smell like lavender, as advertised. It was a strong chemical, for which I was trying to AVOID. Yes, that went into the garbage.

What a wonderful non-toxic solvent for use with oil paints and to blend colored pencil! A very little goes a long way. The lavender scent is very, very strong and might pose some challenges for people with allergy sensitivities. However, I cracked open a window and the fragrance dissapated some. You won't want to work very close to the paper or canvas as you might get a headache. I have allergies and can get migraines from too strong odors and perfumes. Again, with proper ventilation, Chelsea Lavender Spike Oil is a wonderful alternative to working with toxic solvents. I love Lavender Spike Oil!
