Electro-Voice ND767A Supercardioid Dynamic Lead Vocal Mic

This is without a doubt one of the best dynamic microphones you can buy.I was originally going to purchase this for the suggested retail of $129.99 elsewhere.This is most likely the best price you can find for this microphone (as of 3/15/2009).This microphone is best for vocal application as it makes high and low voice constants very crisp. Especially noticeable: the low voice consonants, as most dynamic microphones will muffle them. Even Shure.It's like having a condenser microphone that you can use anywhere.The signal to noise ration is ridiculously great compared to other low end microphones I've been working with.It's definitely better than an MXL 990 for vocals too.I bought a microphone foam ball to place on it, it feels unnecessary, I think the windscreen does a great job. I wouldn't use anything more than a thin single screen pop filter.Also, its unique because it picks up low frequencies best when close up, and high best when far away. I prefer about 12 inches. It comes in a leather case, with its connection for a mic stand. The weight and feel of this microphone is impressive, and very professional.I will use this for vocals from now on, if it breaks....I buy it again from this seller because of their value.Thank you!.

I'm on my third EV ND767A mic. . .I'm a female vocalist in a classic rock/dance band that used to play full time, now play weekends, so we move the gear a a fair amount. I pack the mics in a Walmart handgun case (very sturdy and foam included) foam lined & cut to fit. For $10 bucks, there's a nice tip -- we load our own gear, so nothing gets tossed around.The sound quality is good, nice clean highs, good balance, very clear mic, it suits my voice. (female, a bit alto-y).Buut. . .the reason I'm on my third mic, is that 2 have failed. I know one took a fall, the other I don't believe so. At some point they begin to deteriorate in sound quality, or fail. I like the mic well enough that I just buy another, the price is very reasonable. And I like the sound much better than a Shure sm58. Plus it's a tax write off.Of course, I've got a couple of shure 58s that are 20 years old, have taken a lot of abuse, and work just fine. If you're looking for a tough mic and like the sound of a 58, that thing is about impossible to kill. But I still like the EV ND767 better.And of course, the majority of EV's may be sturdy & my experience is unusual -- I would look at all the reviews and see if you hear any other failure stories before not buying, because I think they sound great. Hope this review helps.*edited to add*: These mics were used every week for one or two one-nighter gigs for at least several years before they failed, hard to remember just how long they lasted, best I can recall 3 to 5 years each, just so you know how much use I got out of them.

I've now had this microphone for a couple of months and I am really liking it. I also have EV's re-issue PL80a, but I think the ND767A sounds less boomy and more intelligible when used up close; a position where other mics suffer big time from proximity effect. The only down side to this is that the mic can sound quite thin if you are too far away from it. This is not really an issue for me, as I tend to "eat" my mic. Being supercardioid, the mic rejects sound from the sides - and the effect is quite pronounced with this mic. Sometimes, you will see performers share a mic on stage - don't even think about trying that with this mic - if you are off axis, you may as well be singing into a hair brush. This ND797A deals with plosives much better than the PL80a too. In fact, you can whistle into the mic, and you hear the whistle without much wind noise - not something you can do with many mics (don't ask why I was whistling at my last gig). :)One comment I would like to make is this: Listening to this mic demoed on a couple of YouTube videos, the mic sounded a little thin and characterless to me. I think this is because the reviewers had the mic plugged straight into their recording interfaces. This mic is tailored for sound-reinforcement, not recording. It shines in this application over a good live sound system - don't place to much credence on the recordings you hear on YouTube - it sounds way better live.At the price Amazon is selling this mic, it's a no-brainer. Great mic for a very reasonable price.

It goes without saying that a microphone is an instrument. Each one has unique characteristics, just like the voice of the person using it. That said, trying to label one mic is 'the best' is totally subjective. I auditioned 5 supercardiod microphones within a price cap of about $200. Those mics were the Shure Beta 58, Samson Q8, Sennheiser E945, Electro Voice ND767 and ND967. All of these mics have unique tonal qualities, excellent build quality, and loads of positive reviews. After about 90 minutes of comparison, my two favorites were the Shure Beta 58 and the EV ND767. Both had excellent tonal quality across the frequency spectrum, provided the most clarity, and cut through the mix best when singing along with a full track. The 767 has a higher gain before feedback ratio, so you need about 25% less gain on your mixer with the EV. I would've gladly purchased either, but considering the EV is currently half the price of the Shure, it was a no brainer. At $75, this mic cannot be beat.

It failed for no reason. Their warranty department (Bosch) provides poor service. Mic is not road worthy. Do not buy.
