Keeping a Straight Face Paperback – February 14, 2013

It's been a long time since I was in high school, and I was a bit hesitant about reading a book set in a time that's so far from where I am now. But a lot of things about that time I remember very well...and I could so easily put myself in Adam's shoes. Senior year, applications to college, wondering whom I'd share a dorm with, desperately hoping to get away from the homophobia where I grew up, and crushes on guys I could never talk about. This book brought back a lot of memories, and it was a nice feeling. An interesting and sudden plot twist (completely diverting the storyline from anything that ever happened to me) set everything up for a very satisfying ending.

An expanded short story that is breezy and full of sly humor is a good description of this read. As with many coming out/coming of age novels, the persona of the narrator is the key element in the reader's enjoyment of the story. The title itself is a cue to the overall point of view.The high school setting is rendered accurately.The dialogue is snappy and maintains the feel of youth. The plot has just enough angst to lend weight to the writing.

This is a nice M/M short story (I wonder where the 135 pages are supposed to be) about coping in small-town US and in a bigoted family as a gay teenager.Its main asset is that of conveying all the tension in a convincing way without pushing too much on the angst button. What drama is lost is more than made up for by a pleasant humour.Writing is in order and editing good.The current price ($4,12) is far too high, though.

I enjoyed this. It's an amusing little story with very likable main characters and a little teenage angst to make it interesting. Well worth my time and money.

I enjoyed this book from cover to cover. It was well written and engaging. It very believable, and it was fun to read.

i would not recommend this to an adult plus it was too short. be good for teens or teachers. it was okay

Wow! This was a really good story. I thought ok, another gay love story about between gay closet high schooler and jock crush but it's way more! It's really is a fun ride taking me back to my youth.
