Mostly abridged, not much updated
I purchased this book' published in 2009, in addition to the much larger "parent" volume which was published in 1996 under a different editor hoping to get a lot of new content. The new editor, Dr. Mark Allen Powell, is a superb writer in the field of Biblical studies.Alas there seems not to be much new content, comparing to the 1996 parent volume. This is still an excellent book.If I had the choice again, I think I'd purchase one of Dr. Powell's other books instead of this condensed version. One feature of this book that seemed a little odd was that the entry on Jesus Christ was 1.5 pages, but more than half of that space was pictures of icons. Perhaps the editor's intention was to provide a dictionary in which people could look up little known factual information, rather than a discussion of the great themes and persons of our faith. In summary: 5 stars if you want a compact Bible dictionary condensed from the 1999 edition ( a very very good work). Since I already had the parent volume, this condensed volume wasn't the best choice. Maybe consider the full volume new edition published in 2011!Dr. Powell * * * * * goes without saying!
