Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents: The Complete Guide to the Famicom Disk System

Great info, poor layout
Great resource for FDS games. Unfortunately, there isn’t any apparent order or categorization to the cataloguing of games in this book. It feels incomplete as it doesn’t address games that were released across multiple discs consistently, with some effort to share the cover art for seconds discs (Detective Club, Yuki Yuki), but no effort in other cases (Time Twist). There doesn’t appear to be any documentation of FDS services like the Disk Writer(Other than noting which releases were available via disc writer - which is extremely helpful), not anything on the contests, blue disks, and prizes associated with those. We do get several pages devoted to unlicensed games and the content of those that are directed at an adult audience. Also included are unreleased titles, but because of the lack of any categorization, those appear to be mixed in with other releases. This release is great in that it provides a lot of information you can’t get elsewhere, but hopefully a reissue will tackle some of the layout problems that undermine the effort

The best English guide to Nintendo's most obscure and important gaming ...
The best English guide to Nintendo's most obscure and important gaming systems. Every game from the system is covered, plus the unlicensed adult titles, and includes publisher/developer, release dates, rarity, original prices, Language Barrier recommendations, and most game labels.*** As the debut system for popular franchises such as The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, and Puyo Puyo, this is an easy recommendation for any Nintendo or Retro fan.My only nitpicks would be a misplaced picture from SMB2 and not including pictures of the various prototype/development/contest disks such as golden Golf disks or the Disc Checker. I love Hardcore Gaming 101 and wish them the best of luck with any future books. :)***Check the references page for a link to a Japanese site with further label scans.

Comprehensive and fascinating
As the introduction makes clear, the Famicom Disk System wasn't exactly chock full of classics that never came to America. Thankfully for this guide, however, the Famicom Disk System was full of games that were worth remembering in one way or another, and I think The Complete Guide to the Famicom Disk System does a great job of describing each game in the kind of detail that allows the reader to discover these unique qualities for themselves. It's a one-of-a-kind title as far as the information that it makes available in English, and I think it will serve as a valuable reference for anyone interested in the history of video games for decades to come.

Excellent reference material...
...for a FDS collector or anyone wanting to learn more about the system and its software. There are some grammatical errors that may result in you reading certain sentences more than once.Edit: I'm only 62 pages in. Sadly, I'm continuing to encounter some really disruptive spelling/grammar errors. I enjoy the content, but I wish some more editing/proofreading had been performed prior to the book being published. The mistakes are kind of ironic. The broken English in some of the FDS titles is mocked on the very same pages containing the mistakes. Unlike the Japanese developers and publishers, I would assume English is the first language of one or both authors.

All you need to get into FDS
A really thorough dive into the games on the FDS, without being overly verbose or off topic. Definitely fits into the HG101 library quality-wise. The descriptions and quasi-reviews are written well and tell you what you need to know, and the side bar on each game gives you the kind of info you need to know (especially the bit about level of Japanese needed to play). Would love to see a similar (probably multi-volume) tome for the Famicom proper.

Fantastic Referenfe Book
Very hard for me to find any criticism to this excellent reference book covering the complete output of the Famicom Disk System. If you ever wish to know more about this fairly unfamiliar accessory to the West, look no further than this book. Well written engaging reviews of hundreds of games. Nicely presented with lovely screenshots and artwork.Another roaring success for HG101
