Metalion: The Slayer Mag Diaries

Metalion has given us the 'underground metal encyclopedia'. I now have every issue of his Slayer mag, and a great insight into his journey through European metal. Fantastic pickup for black metal fans. Must have. at 39$ it is completely worth it.

Where do I even begin with this book!? I CAN'T set it down, it is SO SO SO good. As a fan of metal/punk/deathrock I know how other books can butcher a legitimate representation of the formation and staple bands of these genres. Many of us have read various books dedicated to the "true" underground genres (many of which are recommended by amazon below these comments in "books you may also be interested in" cough cough) that just do a horrible job and stop any true fans in our tracks to yell "WHAT? THAT BAND SUCKS! THAT IS TOTALLY WRONG". I mean come on, you can't name drop an incredible band then a page later have some awful band in the same respects, it just leads readers to lose total respect and credibility of the authors understanding for the rest of the way. HOWEVER, Never did I once experience such a thing in this monster of a book. It just continues to throw amazing information and bands in your face. Back to back you can expect to just see killers songs/bands/concerts/tapes/photos/zine cut outs/ artists that demand total respect and worship. This book TAUGHT me information about bands, never did I once feel as I have with other books to second guess the music taste of the author. As a reader, you will definitely understand if you didn't before how incredible Metalion's experience and music taste is. This is the ultimate, and real deal. No book dedicated to metal is as incredible as this. In-between all the amazing bands you get an authentic bio of Metalion/Jon himself and his journey which is equally as addicting to read. I feel GRATEFUL for Jon taking his time to share his experience, he has given true lovers of metal such as myself a view inside a world that the internet just doesn't allow us to properly understand anymore. This is seriously an addition to the metal scene, and metal fans of older or newer generations, you will either learn from this book or feel nostalgia through it, whatever the experience it won't be one that lets you down. This book is a must have for any fans of metal OR anyone interested in learning more about metal [this book will steer you in the right direction with what bands to start out with or look into]! Don't even second guess yourself when it comes to buying this book, there is no way in hell you'd regret it!p.s wah wah wah to the people complaining about how small the font is on some parts of the book, it's 700ish pages can you imagine how ridiculous it would become if he blew up the font?! It's clips of the zine, this is how they looked (and still do!) small font crammed together! Grab your glasses and stop your bitching! It's hardly anything to truly rate this book or respect it any less for.

Ordered 4/13, arrived 4/16. Read fist two chapters before bedtime. Could not put it down and I want to goat it slow and savor this huge monster of a book. A must purchase.I love seeing the names of bands I was listening to back in '85. Everyone has a how' I got into Metal' story, and have it progress from there to where it can almost consume you. Also we all know of those who left the scene(posers anyway). Oh, of course in every scene there is the more Metal than you guy out there too! It is really neat to read this author's journey down the path to Metal music enlightenment and I am always for anyone exposing this thing called Heavy Metal(and all it's subcategories) to the rest of the world. I cannot wait to explore this

blew me away!I can't even remember who recommended this to me, but I was expecting a smallish paperback with a few b/w pics. WOW was I wrong!! HUGE book! like a huge brick! absolute quality printing and binding, a mindblower from the start.Worth every penny, in fact worth treble the price, this is a book I'll keep for ever, there's SO much in itOK, maybe you gotta be an early BlackMetal/DeathMetal fan, or a retro GraphicDesigner/fanzine nut to really appreciate this masterwork, but you will not be dissappointed.It's re-print of all the 'SLAYER' underground metal fanzines, with clusterbombs of full color photos and a running commentary of the authors life. It says so much about that time (late80s-2000) early BlackMetal, the murders, the attitudes, music, and just the struggle of growing old. The author Metalion bares his soul, brutally and honestly. I could not have asked for more. I wish him all the luck in the world. Buy this book, you WILL love it. HAIL SATAN!

Plain and simple, this book brings me back fond memories of my formative years as a metalhead. For me, as a brazilian, Slayer Mag has always been kind of a fetish, the magazine that helped unleash european extreme metal. A real hard-to-find item here at the time. I was positively surprised by the richness of what I found inside this heavy book (in both senses, it weights aprox. 6 kg!). Nice stories from Metalion's own experience with members of several scandinavian metal bands serve as introductions to every issue of Slayer Mag. Then you've got first interviews of several classic extreme bands. Arne Babb. Drawings by lots of well known extreme metal musicians - who, at the time, also happened to be zine editors themselves. The list would be endless. For you that's been following metal since the 80's, it will be a really nice add to your collection. Highly recommended.

I just received my copy of The Slayer Mag Diaries. This book is unbelievably huge! It's wellover 700 pages of various Death, Black, and Thrash Metal bands from the 80's - 2000, as wellas the earliest Heavy Metal bands, even I never heard of. Like the one reviewer stated, there isno way anyone could read every word of this monster book in one sitting. You would need plentyof time on your hands to do it. Even though I've never read Slayer Mag before, from what I've seenso far, Metalion is a Metal God. This book is hard to put down, it's heavy, this is a Metal fan'sdream come true. All of my favorite bands are in here. Morbid Angel, Morbid, Mayhem, Immortal,Darkthrone, U.S. Death/Black bands, Swedish, Norway, etc., they're all in this behemoth of a book.I'm taking my time reading and looking at the rare photographs, believe me, you'll get your money'sout of this book. The best book on Extreme Metal period!

I love a fanzine anthology. I've got a few already, but this one tops the lot. Extremely well presented and put together. (It's BIG and HEAVY). What I think sets this apart is the introduction to each issue, giving context to each place in time, rather than *just* being a collection of xeroxed pages. Not that the zine itself isn't worthy on its own, but having Jon summarise that place in time really does give this book something a lot of zine anthologies don't have. You get to know the creator and you immerse yourself in his creation simultaneously. For me, what separates a fanzine from a glossy magazine (as well as budget and whatnot) is that this isn't extreme metal through a subjective lens. This is an enormous fan of music creating content about things he was/is fanatical about, and that angle makes it so much more immersive to read. Deciding one day that you love something so much that you're going to make your own magazine about it by yourself, how do you display dedication on a grander scale than that?It is an enormous book, and when I first got it, I read all of the issue introductions in one go, whilst flicking through the zine pages, took in the aesthetic and presentation - and for a zine which began over 30 years ago, even the issues form the 80's have been incredibly well restored. Now that I have read all of Jon's input, I am going to go back and read each zine front to back. The early issues are entirely on Norwegian, but the layout and the graphics are still great to look at, but from issue 5, it's all on English, so you have so much content to read and take in. I don't believe you need to be the biggest fan of black metal to enjoy this - I have a passing interest in BM (I am more fascinated with the mythology and the controversy than the music itself, though I like some bands) - but if you have any interest at all in extreme music (be it hardcore punk, heavy metal and beyond) or DIY ethics in music, as well the cut and paste fanzine aesthetic, then this book is essential.I'd call this the perfect 'coffee table book', because it's enormous, and big enough to be your coffee table. Buy this, or be stupid.

Metalion has finally decided to hang up his keyboard, well all good things must come to an end. What he has left is invaluable to those of us that were around in the dark ages before Amazon and the internet brought the whole metal world to our fingertips and Fanzines such as Slayer Magazine were the only way to hear about the latest new bands from around the world.All twenty copies of Slayer Mag are reprinted here, all be it in reduced size that does making some articles difficult to read, but hey they were difficult to read the first time around because Slayer Mag was a labour of love that was put together by hand and usually showed. It is all here the rise and ultimate fall of Norway's black metal scene and along with it Metalion's eventual disenchantment with the whole thing.We won't see another Slayer Magazine the world has moved on and that is no bad thing, but I can't help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the days when when waiting months for some crappy re-recorded demo seemed normal and old copies of Slayer Mag would dis-intergrate from being read over and over again.

Dieses Buch bietet langen Lesespaß und gehört ohne Diskussion in jede Metal-Bibliothek!METALION: THE SLAYER MAG DIARIES enthält nichts weniger als die 20-teilige Gesamtausgabe des berühmten norwegischen Slayer-Fanzines - dem Zine, welches für den extrem lebendigen (und sehr aktiven) Metal-Untergrund der ganz frühen 90er eine extrem wichtige Rolle eingenommen hat und welches auch in den Jahren davor und den Jahrzehnten danach immer wieder für Akzente sorgte. Natürlich werden nicht nur norwegische Bands gefeatured (es finden sich Bands aus aller Herren Länder, inklusive Faith No More, die man hier nun nicht unbedingt erwarten würde) und die Stilrichtungen sind auch vielfältig... und alles ist extrem "uhrig". Wenn der überstrapazierte Ausdruck KULT mal berechtigt ist dann bei Werken wie diesem - vom "Slayer" Mag hat vermutlich fast jeder Metalfan gehört, aber die älteren Ausgaben haben sicherlich nicht allzuviele im Schrank stehen.Wer wie ich etwas älteren Jahrgangs ist und die Fanzine-Subkultur gerade in der Prä-Internet Zeit erlebt hat, in welcher diese Werke buchstäblich mit dem Herzblut ihrer Macher gemacht wurden, teilweise mit Schreibmaschine oder 9-Nadel-Drucker aufgesetzt und dann zusammenfotokopiert wurden, bei dem werden hier ohnehin nostalgische Gefühle einstellen. Vieles wirkt schlichtweg unglaublich kultig und eben absolut authentisch - authentisch in dem Sinne, dass hier keine Redaktion, keine Trendanbiederung und keinerlei kommerzielles Interesse hinter dem Werk stehen, sondern etwas vorliegt, was von einem Fan ohne Anleitung und im Alleingang für andere Fans gemacht wurde. Über eine Szene sagten (und sagen) Fanzines häufig mehr aus als irgendwelche Hochglanzmagazine, und diesen Eindruck bestärkt METALION: THE SLAYER MAG DIARIES voll und ganz.Interessant ist auch, dass viele der hier behandelten Bands auch heute noch aktiv und populär sind - nur eben dem Begriff "Untergrund" längst entwachsen sind (und auch erwachsen wurde).Sicherlich muss man sich bei vielen der Interviews vor Auge halten, wie jung die Protagonisten vielfach waren - die meisten dürften zwischen 17 und 22 gewesen sein, vermutlich mitunter noch Schüler. Das deswegen so manche Sprüche und so manche Aussagen grenzwertig sind darf getrost in Kauf genommen werden, gerade zu der Zeit der großen Black Metal Welle Anfang der 90er. Gerade hier ging es, neben den tatsächlichem und jedem Interessierten ohnehin bekannten Auswüchsen, vielen Musikern der damaligen Szene auch darum, schlichtweg Aufsehen zu erregen und sich als ultrahart, böse sowie TRVE zu präsentieren... und man lese nur beispielsweise mal das Interview mit Vorph von der schweizer Band Samael und vergleiche es mit einem seiner heutigen!Das darüber hinaus natürlich neben Musikern auch einige ausgewiesene Wirrköpfe und Kriminelle zu Wort kommen wird jedem, der dieses Buch bestellt, ohnehin klar sein.Aber auch ansonsten ist METALION bemerkenswert: Jon Kristiansen spart nicht mit persönlichen, oftmals witzigen und häufig sehr emotionalen Anmerkungen, und gibt dem Leser viel Einblick in sein jeweiliges Leben zu den Zeiten der jeweiligen Ausgabe, garniert mit privaten Fotos. Ebenso gibt er Anekdoten zum Besten, die irgendwie mehr über den (primär) norwegischen Metal-Untergrund aussagen als all die von Außenseitern verfassten Traktate und Spekulationen. Jon Kristiansen kennt eben viele der namentlich jedem geläufigen Protagonisten seit Jahrzehnten persönlich, ist mit einigen gut befreundet und war in manche Vorgänge natürlich auch direkt involviert - und er hat offenkundig kein Interesse, an irgendwelchen Legendenbildungen mitzuwirken.Bemerkenswert ist vor allem, wie schonungslos Jon Kristiansen bei Allem selbst mit sich ins Gericht geht: hemmungslos offenbart er sein aus seiner heutigen Sicht oftmals widersprüchliches Verhalten und gibt öfters unumwunden zu, diverse Entscheidungen aus purer Feigheit oder reiner Naivität getroffen zu haben. Auch schreibt er ohne jede Selbstglorifizierung und präsentiert sich als zutiefst sensiblen Kerl voller Selbstzweifel und ohne jegliche Allüren, der gar keine Lust hat, irgendein Szeneoriginal zu sein - und wirkt gerade deshalb um Welten authentischer (oder meinetwegen "true-er") als viele der Maulhelden, welche auch diese Szene bevölkern.Auch hier zeigt sich, wie viel Herzblut Jon Kristiansen in sein Fanzine steckte und wie viel im dies in seiner 25 jährigen Bestehenszeit bedeutete.Unbedingt erwähnt werden muss auch noch der in jeder Hinsicht faire Preis: knapp 40 Euro für über 700 Seiten großformatiges Material, abgerundet von Farbfotos und vielen schwarz weis Bildern - das muss man diesem Buch erst einmal nachmachen! Ein weiterer Grund, dieses Werk zu unterstützen!Alles in Allem: wie eingangs geschrieben - dieses Buch gehört ohne Diskussion in jede Metal-Bibliothek!

Ich hatte wohl Glück, dass ich das Buch für 25,95 € bekommen habe. Hätte aber auch keine Lust, mehr auszugeben.Wie der dicke Autor so ist auch sein Werk... ein Brocken. Also mit diesem Wälzer kann man Poser erschlagen.Hier sind alle Ausgaben des legendären norwegischen Underground-Metal-Magazins chronologisch versammelt, leider nicht vollständig. Es fehlen also etliche Interviews (darunter das mit Order From Chaos!) sowie die ganzen Platten- und Demorezensionen (Schade!). Zudem sind die ersten beiden Slayer Mags auf Norwegisch, das dritte teils Norwegisch, teils Englisch.Die restlichen Ausgaben sind auf Englisch, kein besonders gutes Englisch (und viel Albernheiten in den frühen Ausgaben - "Metalion" war jung), aber es geht.Zwischen den einzelnen, wie gesagt nicht ganz vollständigen, Ausgaben beschreibt Herr Kristiansen rückblickend seine Lebenssituation zu der Zeit und die Ereignisse in seinem Umfeld (z.B. "Inner Circle" in Norwegen, Reise nach Australien zu Sadistik Exekution, Wacken). In diese biographischen Notizen ist eingebettet die Entstehung der jeweiligen "Slayer"-Ausgabe, deren Bandauswahl immer in Bezug steht zur jeweiligen Lebenssituation dieses musikverrückten Außenseiters.Die biographischen Notizen erscheinen ehrlich und offen, und ich weiß nicht, ob man sich durch solch eine Offenheit nicht angreifbar macht. Das ist mir zu viel Striptease in der Öffentlichkeit, aber das muss er wissen.Im Grunde erscheint er mir als ein typischer Metalhead, wie es sie wie Sand am Meer gibt, und dafür kann ich keine Sympathie empfinden. Zugute zu halten sind ihm allerdings neben der Ehrlichkeit seine Leidenschaft für die Musik, die Verachtung von Trends und der eigene, auserlesene Geschmack.Das Besondere ist, dass Jon Kristiansen früh mit späteren "Szenegrößen" in Kontakt war, die ersten Gehversuche vieler Extremmetalgrößen von Anbeginn mitbekommen und – was nicht zu unterschätzen ist – sie auch richtig eingeordnet hat. Während andere die Nase über den "Lärm" rümpften, erkannte "Metalion" die Qualität und machte sicherlich solchen Gruppen Mut. Genauso deutlich wurde er aber auch, wenn ihm etwas nicht gefiel. Black Death, Fenriz' Darkthrone-Vorgänger, verriss er; für Fenriz heute noch eine brutale Erinnerung."Metalion" war da, zu jeder Zeit, an jedem Ort, wo guter (Extrem-)Metal gemacht wurde und hat darüber geschrieben, hat den Gruppen eine Plattform gegeben, sie bekannt gemacht, und jeder, der diese Musik liebt und die Original-Ausgaben nicht hat, wird diesen Schinken mit Genuss lesen...

Jon "Metalion" Kristiansen con su ilusion y amor por el heavy metal en su vertiente mas extrema, creo, gracias a su "Slayer Mag" un 'zine único y verdadero narrador de lo que acontecia en la escena underground noruega, ofreciéndonos, también una visión del underground mundial. Previo a cada numero del fanzine, Jon, nos habla del momento en que se gesto cada numero siendo impactante el dedicado al numero 10 editado en 1995 pero en el cual relata los hechos finales acaecidos en Noruega alrededor del inner circle. Historico libro y grandísimo personaje Metalion. Nunca se le agradecerá lo que hizo por expandir este tipo de música.
