Great mag for history buffs, particularly English history
In the era of Nexus-Kindle-iPad, I'm down to one print magazine subscription: BBC History Magazine. It's a beautiful magazine that I read cover-to-cover as soon as it arrives in the mail. It's kind of expensive (about $7 a copy) but well worth it for the amateur historian looking to get exposure to lots of history topics. One thing to make clear up front is that it is very English-focused. Not British-focused, or Europe-focused, or world-focused. I'm quite interested in English history, so that works very well for me, but if you're not really into English history, despite the mag's efforts to cover a broad range of world topics, it's probably not going to be of great interest. The other criticism I have is that it's a bit ... fluffy. Even the feature articles are very short; nothing is ever covered in sufficient depth for a true history enthusiast. A recent article on women in Anglo-Saxon times barely scratched the surface of the topic, and defaulted to inane politically-correct themes instead of really digging in to that fascinating subject. The mag's coverage of the Richard III skeleton discovery and its implications was brief and feeble. On the other hand, the brief articles do at least pique your interest and give you things to go read more about and research on the web. And maybe lack of depth is an unfair criticism of a monthly magazine; it is, after all, not a quarterly academic journal. The writing is good, and there are lots of cool pictures and graphics to keep things interesting.Despite those criticisms, as noted above, it's actually the only magazine to which I subscribe, and each month I wait for it to get here so I can dig in. I'll give it the five stars, although I wish they would have one or two major articles each month that got double or triple the word-count currently given to the feature stories.

Worth the purchase
Great magazine to purchase to learn more on English and European history. This magazine would work great for the child-adolescent in the age 12-18 range or even for the middle age adult like myself. All articles in the magazine are scrutable with a depth of information on English history and other articles on European history and British culture in general to well round out this magazine. Its nice to also work on the crossword puzzle in the back of the zine. The only caveat would be as I mentioned that the magazine is mostly focused on English, European history and British culture. It isn't a problem with me, since I'm an Anglophile and love English history and culture. In addition another caveat would be this mag ships out from Bristol, England so you will be waiting some time to receive the next issue. So you should have forbearance in waiting for the next edition to come in the mail. The wait time was a little too much for me so I decided to cancel my subscription and decided to buy this mag off and on at my local barnes and nobles bookstore whenever I need to get my fix on British and European history.

Not that great!
I received this magazine as a Christmas present from my wife. I enjoy history and love anecdotal literature. I found the BBC History Magazine to be okay but not great. It took a little to figure out how to properly read it on a Kindle, as it is laid out starting with the editorial page, moves to the comment page and then progresses along through the various sections of the magazine. If you want to get into the meat of the magazine and know exactly what is being discussed in the issue, you need to go from the table of contents and to navigate from there. While the December 2012 issue dealt with a number of interesting topics, I found that some of the articles weren't handled properly or as thoroughly as I would have liked. In particular, I disliked the article comparing `The Hobbit' and Anglo-Saxon England. While much of the world of `Middle Earth' appears to be like `Dark Ages' England, I would have rather read an article dealing specifically with every day life and the role of the citizenry in Anglo-Saxon England, rather than skimming through an article that has tied the topic to an upcoming popular film in hopes of garnering interest. My other complaint is the inclusion of image descriptions throughout the magazine. If you don't intend to include the images in the Kindle version, get rid of the image descriptions. These are disruptive and annoying.I intend to continue reading the magazine to see if it improves but unless some of the formatting issues are resolved I don't think I will keep this magazine.

I have enjoyed this great magazine for years.
I wait every month for my new Kindle edition of BBC history. I love it love it. Easy to read and navigate. So much information I can hardly remember at all! I have a history BA But I realize that I really don’t know much. This magazine makes me go and further investigate different subjects. I am going to order the Kindle version for my daughter.

New approach to historical fiction
I still very much like BBC History which always has interesting arcticelse and is much cheaper than a new Danish history MagazineBut I do miss the previous reviews of historical fiction by Rennison, Alone with a few similar examples,I find historical fiction to be a covenient Way to get acquainted with various historical events an epoques. The BBC history seems to have replaced these features with other approaches to fiction.Admitted, it May not have been much of a proper review, but still an inspiring introduktion👍

Context, Contexy, Context
I simply enjoy how history puts much of current affairs in context. Although much of BBC History Magazine is UK-based, they do foray into other parts of the world -- a trend that seems to be on the rise and I hope it continues. This magazine is not the history you learn in school or university. The biggest plus about this magazine is that it brings history to life. Everything from wars to famines and medicine through the ages; customs, rituals and what have you spring to life. Bottom line: if my history teachers over the years and taught me using the writing style of the BBC history magazine, I would have majored in history at university instead of spending the rest of my life catching up.

Be aware of the £45 bill for free copy on kindle
Mine was a kindle edition so the thickness is not relevant to me, fairly easy to read and informative on the historical subjects covered in this issue. I had the free issue on kindle when I received the details I had a £45 bill that I had to chase Amazon to remove

Descriptive text, fewer pictures .
I was not as impressed with the on-line version of BBX History and will only read the hard copy version going forward. The pages are full of descriptive words and fewer picture to support the text, which find disappointing.

Too many typographical errors
The content is very interesting but the layout and errors in the digital magazine are dreadful. Several articles were repeated and sentences and paragraphs were transposed. This ruined the reading experience and it is not the first time it has happened. When I first took out a subscription, several years ago, I had no complaints about the layout but in recent months the quality has been deteriorating month by month. I have had enough and I intend to cancel my subscription.

Bite size articles which are comprehensively informative.
There are lots of little articles with sophisticated and nuanced perspectives that have seriously broadened my view of history. The focus is on British history but there's great coverage of the rest of the world too.
