Pauline at the Beach [DVD]

Blu-ray is worth the extra $$$
I originally saw this film in 1982 (inspired to go see it by Siskel & Ebert's TV review), and it instantly became one of my most favorite films.Rohmer drew me into the film and made me feel as if I was in the room with the characters listening to their philosophical ideas about love & life.If you're interesting in watching the movie, I strongly suggest that you get the Blu-ray version. It's full HD (1080p -- very clear & sharp) and, although the soundtrack is still mono, it has been improved (& the sub-titles are clearer, as well). The Blu-ray version is a huge improvement over the other versions that I have owned (laserdisc & regular DVD).

more worldly cousin still young but full of contradictory ideas about love and romance
Rohmer has perfected his type of movie: a well crafted study that poses almost as a home movie. His moral point of view is there for you to discover, but never didactic or heavy handed. The movie is exactly that, Pauline at the beach. She is a young woman on the verge of adulthood who has been left in the care of her older, more worldly cousin still young but full of contradictory ideas about love and romance. Pauline is quite resilient and is at first influenced to some degree by her cousin and her male friends. Through the course of the story we see Pauline become skeptical and then rejecting this world of selfishness and trivial intrigue.

" is excellent, clear
I imagine that in most video purchases the customer is sold on the film or movie and has decided to buy it, what's really important to know is the quality of the recording. This version of "Pauline..." is excellent, clear, sharp images and rich color. So if you like the movie you wont be disappointed in this print or recording of it.

Insights on love from the Normandy coast
This movie was beautifully shot and had a unique storyline. Set on the Normandy coast of France, Pauline a la Plage follows a young girl, Pauline, and her cousin, Marion, on a beach holiday. The characters Pauline encounters have different ideas of what it means to love and relate to others. Pauline observes and critiques these visions (without being too judgmental) and also forms her own ideas of how to love.

Good introduction to Rohmer
This has a great teenage female lead, clear-sighted and in contrast with three Rohmer males -- unpleasant, weak, self-important, one almost evil. It's a beautiful film to look at. As in all Rohmer movies, the male characters love to hear themselves talk and some people don't like that. This has a lot in common with Claire's Knee, another wonderful movie, perhaps even better, and available with a number of other Rohmer films on Hulu Plus.

A new Criterion print of Rohmer
Working my way back through late Rohmer. Many of his best work from the later years is still not on DVD (in US DVD versions, at least) or only available in very poor quality DVDs. Pauline was not one of my favorites, but I liked it a lot more this time. Just out on Criterion, and I assume this copy is from them. Pristine DVD.

Pauline Plus Fun
One of my favorite past-times is watching foreign films, especially French films. This past weekend while waiting for the late play-off game, I ran across "Pauline At The Beach". It was on HBO or ShowTime, which is really not important. The movie is filmed somewhere in France along a wonderful beach. The characters are all well played, the story line is well written and I think it was a fun movie. If you do not like nudity or sub-titles, can't stand the French, hate wine, well, better you should choose another movie. If you like movies with a little depth, check it out.

I could watch the films of Eric Rohmer till les vaches come home. This one is a sly charmer from 1982 concerning the teenage Pauline, who is on holiday on the Normandy coast with her beautiful, newly separated cousin Marion, where they run into old and new male friends. Unlike some Rohmer films, this has an early central plot twist which turns proceedings into an almost Ayckbournian comedy of sexual mishaps and misunderstandings.Like all his films though (of which, luckily, I still have many to see) this is beautifully and - a Rohmer trademark - naturally acted. Arielle Dombasle, of whom I`d not heard before, is sunnily upbeat as the blonde, slightly flighty Marion, while the young Amanda Langlet strikes just the right note of youthful curiosity, mixed with the gauche yet placid dignity of a happily blossoming young woman among experienced adults. Her eyes speak volumes. In her first film she carries its heart with discreet elan. The men respond to these vivacious performances with energetic wit, in particular Pascal Greggory as Marion`s besotted suitor and ex-lover Pierre, a shily handsome idealist who will keep getting the wrong end of the stick.Pauline too has her beau, and the older, womanising Henri juggles Marion and a local beach sweet-vendor whose affections are as changeable as the tides...Like not a few of Rohmer`s other films, this brief comedy-drama plays out like one of Maupassant`s ironic, world-weary tales, only perhaps a little less cynically. If you don`t much like talky French cinema (in which case you`re unlikely to be reading this) then you probably won`t take to it. If however, like me, you can`t get enough of French films, and love Rohmer and his witty, lovestruck fables, this will be manna from heaven.Sheer delight.

Un très beau film très abouti sur le fond et la forme, des dialogues très écrits et puis Amanda Langlet belle comme un premier amour de vacances.
