This is THE ideal book that I've been looking for! A real must-have!!!!
I have been a fan of adult colouring for a few years now, but I really wanted to expand my colouring skills and develop and explore new ideas and possibilities rather than just colouring in blank spaces with lots of "flat" colour which I was beginning to find rather boring. I used to go on youtube a lot and watch tutorial colour alongs but these proved rather difficult to follow, and a book was really what I required.I came across The Colourists Special Effects on a colouring group, first time I'd ever heard of Helen's work before and I was eager to buy this book as it is exactly what I've been waiting for! It has EVERYTHING any colourist would ever need and MORE!! This gorgeous book is fully illustrated and split into the following chapters:.Shading and blending pencils, Light and shade on 3D spheres and boxes..Hair, lips, skin- and sunglasses.Nature- Water drops, air bubbles, shiny butterfly, red rose and daisy, clouds, glossy spotted mushrooms, soap and neon bubbles, mermaid scales, animal fur, translucent fairy wings..3D shapes and objects- 3D bows and wine glasses, balloons, crowns glowing candles and lanterns, chrome, tear shapes.Gems- 9 different types!.Backrounds- Snowfall, stained glass effect, red sunset- the list goes on!The book is printed on white paper of medium thickness, works well withy both pens and pencils, layering and blending. On each page there is always several spaces to practice the technique after reading the easy step- by- step guides which are just perfect for a beginner, no technical language at all, just plain, simple and nicely spaced and laid out. Each step by step instruction has a coloured example which is computer generated, which means you can see each part easily. Further Practice pages are also provided printed on single side to prevent any bleed through. There are also several scenes to colour in this book. At the back is a handy colour wheel with art tips on how to colour it. Next, are spaces for you to test how colours look together, always a must-have! Then follow "signature cards" which feature a certain item such as a gem or flower for you to colour in with space for your name, and finally, there are 10 pages to record your art supplies!Simply AMAZING. Helen has clearly put a huge amount of time and effort in to creating this book and it sure is worth it, a pleasure to colour in! Thank you Helen!I recommend purchasing the colour interior version as opposed to the greyscale, as colour interior allows you to see exactly how each piece should look when coloured.Oh, and I've heard that Helen is currently writing a sequel!!!!! Can't wait! Best book I've seen in a long time, a real must buy for adult colourists, artists, beginners, or people who just love all things pretty and colourful! Highly recommended!!!

Highly Recommend!!!!
I have literally just received this AMAZING book! It has got to be one of the Best Art books which I have purchased; it shows you step by step pictures and instructions on how to use tone within colour for eg a tear, eyes, bubbles.... It helps you to recognise exactly where and why light should fall in a certain area. I have already picked up so many tips!!!It gives you the opportunity to fill in your own example next to where it’s helped you.. .... it’s brilliant!!Well done to the author Helen Ellison for creating this book plus ... there are a series of these books, so I plan to buy them all as I can afford.I can not recommend this book enough... it delivers results.... I can see my art will go from strength to strength.

Essential Kit
Great tutorials on how to make your adult colouring look amazing! It's a essential piece of kit and will help you make the most of those gorgeous colouring books we have. Aimed mainly at coloured pencils (so far anyway I haven't finished the book yet) and gives a good introduction into actual art theory that I've read in' traditional' art instruction books. I did however find the paper a tad difficult to use with my Prismacolors. The paper feels a bit shiny even though I can feel a tooth so it requires you to lay down super light layers. Perhaps oil based pencils might fair better. That said it is a very minor issue and Prismas do work just use a very light hand to ensure you don't burnish the paper in error and can't lay down anymore colour. All in all HIGHLY recommended!

Great for all level of artist
This book has taught me how to add that little bit more to my pictures and colouring. Easy to follow instructions, with practice pages to work with, so you can get it right before working on your own art. Ideal for beginners and a great resource for those who need that little bit guidance. Good value and pleased I got it as part of my collection.

Great books full of various tips
Love the idea of this book, love many tutorials that you can use to improve your skills. One think I don't love is the price. Seems a bit steep.

Brillaint guide! Recommend to all colourists!
Brilliant colouring guide! Highly recommend to every colourist no matter your skill level, the instructions are clear and easy to understand, complete with beautiful colour examples. Includes test pages for you to try out the tutorials straight away. The colour version is worth the extra money so be sure to get this one instead of the greyscale version. The colour version is not only beautiful but helpful as you can see where each colour should go :)

Fab book, highly recommend!
Love this book. Has everything you need in order to get your pictures looking fantastic. I saw a review that said the paper was smooth and had no tooth, on the pages where your required to colour the paper does have alot of tooth, evem though it feels smooth, it does take pencils well. I have tried pencils on it and you can layer just fine. There is two different types of paper used in this book so you can practice on the paper that has plenty of tooth

Colouring Tips and Techniques
A gift for my daughter and she’s loving it. She’s working through the exercises systematically and they really are useful. After practising her colouring technique she is going to transfer her skills to her adult colouring books.

Bra tips
Kvaliteten på pappret är inte bra. För att kunna färglägga i boken måste pappret vara bättre.Många bra tips, särskilt för en som inte färglagt så mycket med färgpennor tidigare.

Wonderful, Step by Step Guide to have you doing Special Effects in minutes!
I wanted to update my original review by adding some images of what I have learned to do. I also want to share a little tip that I find works nicely for me. I take tracing paper and place it on top of each step and color with my pencils. I get a good feel for the process. I keep learning and improving my coloring skills. I am very thankful for this book and am definitely looking forward to the next edition. You will need to know how to use the techniques from this edition in order to be able to complete some of the techniques in the next edition. Not sure how many that will entail. It is well worth learning now as you can see sneak peeks of the upcoming additions on Ms. Elliston's social media page. Now for my original review. I don't know where to begin. This Guide is fantastic. I am new to Adult Coloring and am so grateful that Helen developed this easy step by step guide to really make a difference in your pictures. I still have a lot to learn but have already seen a difference in how my images are turning out. I love that Helen is very active on Social Media and has asked for input on her 2nd Edition. I am definitely looking forward to that Guide as well. Colorist's Special Effects is well done. You have easy to understand photos along with instructions to get many desired effects. From Chrome, Hair, Skin, Lips, Eye Glasses and more, there is something new to learn at every turn. There are a lot of tricks for backgrounds as well as everyday items that add to your colored pieces. Glitter nail polish has become one of my favorite items to make certain images pop. If you want to take your Coloring to a Higher Level, I highly recommend this book. Learn to do jewels, bugs, tear drops, water drops, paint drops and more. I could go on and on, but if you purchase the book you will see what I am talking about. I am enclosing just a small sampling of what I have done. My clouds had an oopsy. They turned out beautifully, but then my Dog decided she wanted my attention right then. I recovered the best I could. Lesson learned, play with Dog before Coloring. Thank you, Ms. Elliston, for such a lovely Book. This book makes great gifts for friends that are Coloring as well. Have gifted to some special people.
