The Trials and Tribulations of First Love
"It's so embarrassing, I could die." (Takayuki)Rize Shinba has put together a sweet, amusing and fluffy little confection in Juicy Cider. But don't be deceived by its 16+ rating; it's quite explicit in certain respects - and it's also refreshingly realistic. So many Boys' Love and shoujo/josei love stories present an impossibly romantic and idealized view of the physical side of a relationship (flowers, soft-focus billowing clouds etc. etc.). Which is lovely... but, as anyone who has been a teenager knows, usually very far from the truth. So, all credit to Rize Shinba, for putting together a genuinely funny and affectionate - yet truthful - look at the humiliations and misunderstandings of two young people trying to express their feelings for each other physically as well as verbally. This is the first manga that I've read by this artist and I love her delicate, expressive drawings. She tells us at in the Afterword that she only produced a chapter a year, so the artwork shows a subtle alteration and improvement in style from beginning to end.
