They did twist a little when not under load and the rope is not perfect but for the cost of purchase these really are ...
If you have ever manhandled fit 6ft double sided feather board fence panels into existing concrete posts on uneven ground then you will know how heavy and unsafe they can be. I bought this pulley set to use with a wooden frame arrangement to hoist the panels into position and they worked a treat without the need for a second person. I was able to control the lift safely with the pulley set and did not feel at any time that they would 'give up'. They did twist a little when not under load and the rope is not perfect but for the cost of purchase these really are minor points. If you were doing more repetitive work this might come into play but it is purely down to the rope and you could just change it if necessary. I do not know if anyone else has pointed this out but the way they are designed the shackles can be removed are they are attached via a hinged plate arrangement. Great little bit of kit!!!

Great value, decent product, but I managed to destroy it...
I bought this because it was such great value and it really was (was!) a pretty decent pulley for light-to-medium use but I did manage to completely destroy it by using it to help pull out/over some tree stumps in my garden, jacking the smaller stumps against the largest one (which I then got out using a mattock - much harder work). What really killed it was tugging violently with all my weight again and again, so that eventually the plastic pulley wheels melted. A lot of heat is generated through the friction between pulley and nylon rope, so go slowly if you're exerting a lot of force! Made a very tough job much easier though, and it managed several stumps before it became completely useless, saving me a lot of time and effort, so I still reckon it was a good buy. It appears to come with a 'lifetime guarantee' but I didn't try claiming after the abuse I gave it. I'd definitely recommend it for occasional normal use like 'lifting heavy things' - it's cheap, very compact and useful to have around. I'll probably buy a replacement when I can justify it! See the review by 'Nonnymoose' (14 Jan 2012) for good instructions on how to modify it to increase the mechanical advantage from 6 to 7 by making better use of the fourth pulley.

Good value and effective
Bought to assist in the removal of a length of 4" cast iron soil pipe that had to stay vertical to avoid damaging the clay pipe it was sitting in. Worked perfectly. It is not the easiest thing to use however, as the very light pulleys will happily twist themselves and tangle the cords between them at every opportunity until under tension - I recommend using something like an old wire coat-hanger bent into a square or piece of wood with a couple of nails in it to hold the pulleys apart until the hoist is about to be used. Once under load the thing works brilliantly, enabling a heavy load to be lifted easily and under control but be aware that there is no locking system on the cord so you need to keep a grip on it at all times until the load is finally lowered.

Just don't let the ropes get twisted !
A block and tackle is a simple device and really works. I needed the extra 'lift' to get heavy items (20-30 kgs) into the loft space and this has basically solved the problem. Having fixed the top pulley to a well bolted-in hook the pulleys can then be pulled down to about 3 metres - ample for most tasks. The unit is quite well made and is advertised as capable of lifting 180 kgs - I wouldn't like to try that though. At the price this is a bargain however I do have one criticism; the rope supplied (about 20m) is of the polypropylene twisted type and will get itself in a tangle at the first opportunity .The pulleys then become tangled and friction between the ropes makes lifting and lowering very difficult. Maybe worth while investing in better rope for the pulleys if you intend to use this a lot. I'm going to see how I get on.

Concrete fence post extraction helper
I bought this pulley set to assist in the removal of seven 2.1m (L) x 100mm section concrete posts that had been holding my back garden fence up for more than 36 years. A modern day slotted post weighs in the region of 45kg and with the attached concrete foundations, the total must have been close to 100kg. Once each post had been broken free of the soil by means of two hydraulic bottle jacks, Silverline 427711 2 Tonne Hydraulic Bottle Jack ; I was able to lift the post clear of the hole, using the pulley set tied to the top rungs of an aluminium ladder, arranged over the hole forming an `A' frame. The pulley set performed beautifully, although Health and Safety might have had something to say about my `A' frame (needs another person to hold the ladder). The pulley set comes with two elongated links, which can be used to facilitate attachment of chain, rope etc. to the pulley fittings. Tips - when lifting heavy items, as the rope is too slim for hands to grip directly, it can be wrapped around a suitable piece of wood to use as a handle. Also when pulling the top and bottom pulley sets back together after use, it helps to keep them under a small amount of tension to prevent tangles occurring. This is an incredibly useful piece of equipment at a very reasonable price.

Silverline cargo pulley set.
The set of pulleys and the polyester rope are useful as a hoist for lifting items that are otherwise too heavy to be handled. The lifting capacity of the hoist is quoted as 180 kg. The price is amazingly low; I bought TWO sets because I wanted to lift a brand-new pillar drill whose components were far too heavy to be lifted by hand. It turned-out that I had been wise to employ two of these hoists; each hoist could have lifted the separate parts of the pillar drill, the heaviest of which was 54 kg, but having a hoist on each side of the item prevented it from swinging while it was being lifted. When it came to lifting the drill-head on to its pillar the two hoists allowed me to tilt the drill head slightly so that I could manoeuvre it precisely on to the pillar. A word of caution: if you plan to use one or more of these pulley sets as a hoist you should take time to consider how you are going to support them. It may not be true that the ceiling of your workshop, for example, is strong enough to support the weight of the item you are trying to lift. You do not want to be in the position of having pulled-down the ceiling. For my job I built a frame of slotted angle, fitted it with large rubber castors from a well-known firm that supplies screws and ironmongery and was able to do the lifting without damage to health or workshop. When you are planning a lifting job do take into account the depth of the two pulleys. Allow an extra 30 cm of headroom for the pulleys. The pulley set is provided with an ample length of rope - I suggest that you wind the rope on to a suitable former, such as the cardboard centre of a roll of kitchen tissue. without doing this the loose rope tangles itself and that becomes a nuisance. Both the upper pulley (the one with the black plastic block fitted to the rope end) and the lower pulley are fitted with four sheet-metal hooks that mesh together so that they are self-closing once the load has been applied. The set is provided with two steel rings that fit into these hooks and provide a way of supporting both the upper pulley and a lifting strap suspended from the lower pulley. A previous reviewer has commented that it is a nuisance when the rope between the pulleys gets tangled. I found that this was caused by either the upper or the lower pulley turning upside-down while the pulleys were not in use. If the rope between the pulleys becomes tangled just take either of the pulleys and rotate it upside down. Experiment will show which way you have to turn it. Also following a comment by a previous reviewer, make sure that you are wearing suitable work gloves when you use the hoist. Conclusion: These pulley sets represent excellent value for money. If you are planning to employ them as a hoist buy TWO sets and make sure that you hang them from a suitably strong support. I recommend these pulley sets.

Quite serviceable
First of all thank you for a rapid delivery - about 3 days only. I wanted this pulley to hoist an old (and absolutely huge) CRT monitor into the loft for storage. It weighed a ton and I slipped a disc a couple of years ago, so must be careful what I lift and how etc. The pulley is basic but in fairness it does the job nicely, and is robust enough for most home purposes, but is not very heavy duty or professional quality. My task involved some extremely careful fixing of hooks plus extra ropes and attachement cords to make sure everything was strong and secure. Next I climbed into the loft and slowly and steadily started hoisting. All went well but the polypropolene cords did tend to twist round for no apparent reason ! I was able to hold the pulley rope with one hand and pull the monitor towards me with another when it was high enough though. The 6:1 mechanical advantage seemed about right. Job done after no more than ten minutes and much care and forethought. You cannot lose your concentration ! Previous reviewers are right - wear thick gloves. A worthy addition to anyone's garage, boat or storeroom. Good to know you have it even if you only use it quite seldom.

A mechanical advantage tool
While this is a 5 start review, this pulley is not without its faults. On the plus side the metal parts are robust and well made, and with a 6:1 mechanical advantage, even heavy loads can be moved with ease. The rope that comes with it is rather poor, it looks flimsy and weak. I immediately replaced it with some 550 paracord and the whole pulley is a much better product. I'd also suggest getting a rope winder to stop the rope getting tangled. It does have a tendency to twist/spin in use, so you also have to go slowly to prevent tangles. Also worth remembering to order something to fix the static end to, like an eyeplate, and a couple of large heavy duty Carabiners.

Prodotto ben fatto e marchiato CE.

Relacion 6 a 1.
