do i need a permit to use it

No you do not, however, you will need permission to use private land from the owner if you use it. Public land is fair game. Normally if you use private land, you will need to agree the terms of any find with the land owner. There is a ready drawn up agreement on one of the metal detecting websites (use google). Hi, no the Ace 150 does not feature the pinpoint facility as on the 250. Basic pinpointing can be achieved with the 150 (or any machine without a pinpoint facility), by 'drawing' an imaginary X with the coil, on the ground over the area indicated by the tone. The centre of the X marks the spot. Steve

will it work under water

The coil is waterproof ie you can wash it in a puddle .. however the control box is NOT waterproof. The coil can be submerged in a stream for instance.. however like other detectors in this range the control box has minimal weather protection,, if you are taking it out in rain you should get a box cover to protect it, or it can be damaged.
