Batman & Mr. Freeze: Subzero

Beats George Clooney!
My young son and I love watching these animated Batman movies. This one is another gem. While Joel Schumacher and co were camping it up with the pretty awful 'Batman and Robin', the makers of the animated series were taking things a bit more seriously with a far better storyline and performances. The basic premise is that Mr Freeze is living a relatively peaceful existence in the Arctic with his crygenically frozen wife and an adopted son until a US submarine accidentally breaks through Freeze's ice cave and destroys the tank keeping his wife alive. Naturally, Freeze isn't best pleased, so he suits up and heads south to try and find a suitable organ donor for his wife, who now needs a pretty urgent transplant in order to live. Awkwardly, the only compatible donor is Commissioner Gordon's daughter, Barbara (Batgirl), who even more awkwardly is dating Dick Grayson (Robin). With the help of a down on his luck surgeon and a couple of nasty polar bears, Freeze kidnaps Barbara with the view to performing a transplant that will probably kill her in the process.Naturally, Batman and Robin have to track down Freeze, stop him and save Barbara. It's a pretty grim storyline, but the action comes thick and fast and Mr Freeze actually makes for a sympathetic villain who comes good in the end.The animation, as expected is excellent, and so are the voice artists, who add real depth to the characters. The only complaint is that at 65 minutes or so, it's a tad short. In hindsight, it really is a shame that the people responsible for 'Batman, the animated series' weren't involved in the Joel Schumacher movies. These animated films stick to the character, tone and mood of what Batman should be and are thoroughly entertaining. 'Batman and Mr Freeze: Subzero' came out the same year as 'Batman and Robin' and the fact that the animated film is so much superior to Schumacher's big budget effort is more than a little embarrassing and provides a pretty good explanation as to why Warner Bros shelved the movies until Christopher Nolan's 'Batman Begins', but kept on knocking out the animated films, albeit straight to video. The beauty with these movies is that both adults and children can enjoy them. I think they're great, and this one is another belter.

Mr Freeze
Batman and Robin and Batgirl take on Mr Freeze who is still looking for a cure for his wife and thinks he has found it when he sees that Barbara Gordon shares the same rare blood type as his wife. Originally released 1 year after the live action Batman And Robin movie which featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr Freeze, this animated spin off of the classic 90's Batman The Animated Series is everything that that live action 1997 disasterpiece should have been and is far superior despite only being just over an hour long. The voice cast of The Batman Animated Series including Kevin Conroy as Batman all return and it does feel like a feature length episode of the Batman Animated Series and one of the all time great animated DC movies.

Impressive
Again, the Batman animated series impresses me, these guys re-invented Mr Freeze, and all for the better, this is his best story, all your fav characters get a mention and the story is beautifully written and animated, if you don't walk away from this film with a tear in your eye or at least feeling you enjoyed what you saw, your heart is as cold as Mr Freeze!

Not the best animated Batman movie, but better than most of the live action films
I ordered this DVD from the US, but it works just fine on my region 2 DVD player, so good news for UK fans who feel like they're missing out!So anyway, this movie is not quite as dark and gripping as Mask of the Phantasm, but it's still a good, lively Batman romp that stays true to the characters. We finally catch up with Mr. Freeze, who has been living a peaceful existence in an ice cave in the Antarctic where his wife Nora has been preserved until a cure becomes available for her illness. However, Nora's condition takes a turn for the worse when a submarine smashes through the cave, disturbing her treatment. Freeze takes revenge on the crew, before heading back to Gotham city, where he enlists the aid of a corrupt doctor to help restore his dying wife. An organ transplant is required to save Nora Fries, and the only suitable candidate in Gotham is Barbara Gordon - daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon. Predictably, the police have no luck tracking down Mr. Freeze, and it takes the efforts of batman and Robin to rescue Barbara from meeting a horrible fate at the hands of two dangerous doctors. This movie does a good job of establishing the characters and their relationships with eachother before the plot kicks in. We get to see the romance growing Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon in the early stages of the film, and this makes us feel for Robin as he frantically tries to save Barbara from Freeze.I do agree with other reviewers who said they would like to have seen more of Barbara in her Batgirl costume. We see a bit of Batgirl kicking ass before she gets captured and spends the rest of the movie as a heroic damsel in distress. She can't escape from Mr.Freeze without her gadgets and Batman and Robin's help - but she puts up a heck of fight everytime Freeze tries to put her in line! ultimately, Barbara is our voice of reason throughout this movie, as she learns more about Mr. Freeze and his tragic circumstances that have made him into a villain, so our Barbara is emotionally strong as well as physically tough. My biggest gripe about this movie, however, is with Mr. Freeze - he's not quite as menacing as he was in the episode Heart of Ice. In that episode, he quite easily overpowered Batman, who could barely put a dent in him. In this movie, Freeze gets pushed over several times, by characters who are weaker than Batman. So that kind of annoys me. He doesn't seem to have that cold, robotic voice he had in the episode, either. The animated series of Batman is also known to have introduced some very appealing original characters (the series gave us Harley Quinn, after all) but some of the newbies in this feature don't quite match up to previous creations. Mr. Freeze has a pair of polar bears under his command, who are quite fierce, but it always feels like animals are included in these cartoons to make it more child friendly (understandable, but us big geeks will always prefer the darker epsisodes!). There's also a little eskimo boy who Fries has adopted, but he also feels forced into the story just to make us sympathise for Mr. Freeze a bit more. The corrupt doctor who teams up with Victor, however, is quite a vile piece of work who needs to be watched out for.Visually, this movie is quite stunning. It has the classic hand-drawn look of the Batman episodes, but with added 3d graphics, which help make the dramatic car chases and scenes with the batwing a bit more engaging. Mr. Freeze's hideout has also been well designed.Additional features could have been better. There's a nice short video that shows us concept artwork comparissions accompanied by clips from the finished movie, and there's some kind of interactive mini-game which I haven't tried yet, but I would like to have seen interviews with the creative team and cast members.Sooo... There's my review. Not as good as Mask of the Phantasm or some of the episodes, but better than that Batwoman movie. and if you feel horribly let down by how Batgirl, Robin and Mr.Freeze were depicted in that humiliating Batman and Robin live action film, then this movie shows you how it should be done. Now we just need a feature length movie with a decent Poison Ivy.

Two Great Movies from My Childhood
Sub-Zero is really a two part episode from Batman: The Animated Series from the 90s which focus alot on Barbara Gordon and one of the underrated complex villians of the Batman universe Mr. Freeze who steals what he needs in order to save his beloved wife's life who suffers from a rare disease. This was one of my favorite episode as a kid because it focus on Batgirl and I like how Dick and Barbara date and fight crime as civilians and also as their alter egos. One of my favorite scene was the date scene when Dick fights off Mr. Freeze's minions trying to kidnap Barbara and tries to chase them down on the bike scene. I miss the cool action scenes in the cartoons from the 80s and 90s. It was a great story. However, I really purchased this DVD for one of my favorite Batman movies Mask of the Phantasm. This is both a masked crusader movie and an origin Batman movie. It focus on the relationship of Bruce and his former flame Andrea. The one woman he would have given up his cape to marry. The movie perfectly blends the past and present day. Even though it's an animated movie, the issues were adult and it treated the fans with intelligent. The score was stunning. Animation beautifully drawn. The backdrop of Gotham City gorgeous. This was the first animated Batman movies and it was a masterpiece. Some of my favorite scenes were the cute meeting between Bruce and Andrea, Bruce fighting off thieves from stealing and when he leaps on top of that motorcycle to punch the bad guy. Bruce's inner conflict of wanting to avenge his parents but still wanting to live a normal life. The two timer old timer scene with the Joker or the love scene between Andrea and Bruce. This movie had so many awesome scenes I still relish from my childhood to adulthood. One of the best movies period with an ill fated love and bittersweet but poignant ending and an amazing score and soundtrack capturing the feel of the movie. If you love The Dark Knight, this is among the best Masked Detective stories
