Updated review!I have now been using this device consistently for seven months, ever since my dog's diagnosis with diabetes. We are now using it with BD ultra fine 31 gauge 6 mm (extremely short) syringes. I would recommend this product to anyone who is struggling, specifically with actually pushing the needle into your dog's skin. Seven months later, my dog has been well-regulated (we check his sugar at home) and actually enjoying his shots (I thought this was impossible) for many many months now. I play a song to cue that he's about to get his shot, and I also give him doggie frozen yogurt (have tested the impact on his blood glucose - it's negligible). He comes with his tail wagging as soon as he hears the opening bars of that same song twice a day. I wouldn't be in this place were it not for this pen. Very grateful for it.---Original review:I'm writing this review for anyone who may have been in a situation like mine and is searching the web looking for ways to help.My dog was diagnosed as diabetic about a week and a half ago. We spent the next few days digesting this news, getting to the vet, learning how to administer the insulin shots, and trying to figure out the best diet for my hypothyroid, well-functioning-but-small-kidneyed, herniated-discs-in-his-back and now diabetic nine year old pup. My dog is the absolute love of my life and, at nine years old and a little guy, I'd like him to be around for just as many more years. Our vet prescribed us syringes, insulin, and ketodiastix, and sent us on our way after I did one practice shot at his office that went very well. At home for the first time, it took me nearly two hours and an awful lot of tears to work up the nerve to give the shot. My dog flinched EVER so slightly and made a small noise, and while it was probably a good first-time-at-home experience, my heart was in my throat and I felt sick. I just couldn't bring myself to push the needle through his skin the next day, and I ended up missing the window of opportunity because it took so many hours of agonizing.Later that morning, I searched the web frantically for an auto injector or pen. I stumbled upon this product here on Amazon and saw that if I ordered it within 45 minutes, I'd have it by that night. My dog had no reaction whatsoever later that night when I used the Ambimed. Since then, I've given the shot a total of five times more. It takes me about ten minutes now to work up the courage compared to HOURS before. I'm hoping that in time, this will become even easier. This pen makes the whole process MUCH easier. It's an intuitive device to put together. I love that you can shorten the needle length, as well. Our vet prescribed us 12" needles, but my dog is not overweight or a large (or even medium) sized breed, and according to all the reading I'd done, it looked like 6-8 mm would be a far better experience for the injection. Using the smaller of the two spacers, I was able to shorten the needle length significantly. It's so significant that even mentally and emotionally, to look upon the needle is not nearly so fear inducing. My dog has reacted minutely about two of the five times I've given the shot with the Ambimed, and those two times, he just looked up for a second. My advice is to teach your dog that the injector pen means something great is about to happen. I am giving my dog a sizable piece of American cheese as soon as I take the pen out and then after the shot is over. The construction of the Ambimed is good enough. Sure, it could be sturdier, but it works and is a godsend. I can't imagine giving the insulin injections twice a day without this device. It has taken my fear and anxiety from about a 5/5 to 1/5. I can't say that injecting my dog is ever going to be easy for me, but I know - absolutely know - that I can do it with the Ambimed.I wish anyone in this situation the best of luck. Hang in there - things will get better. And if you're struggling... ORDER THIS. It will change everything.

I'm a trans guy, and I bought this to take my testosterone injections with. The syringes and needles that I am prescribed do not fit in this device, as they are way too long. I have jury-rigged it with a bunch of rubber bands to increase the length and make it usable, but I wish that that wasn't necessary.

Bruises For Me!
Loved the idea, hated the bruises! The major flaw is that the needle is not held tight enough and wiggles around.I got some sore spots from not having the needle held firmly in place while I depressed the plunger. I still prefer this over self injecting, But I don't have to use it everyday. It would be too painful to use everyday. I used 1cc shots so maybe a larger size would fit better and hold firmer.

Great for canine diabetes doses.
We use this on our Miniature Schnauzer who needs insulin twice a day. Before we found this product it was a real struggle giving her the injection. She does not even notice the skin prick now and doesn't make a fuss at all. Hint: give a treat after each dose also. There are several adapters for different syringe sizes and injection depths. It works with the veterinary syringes perfectly.
