is the vinyl output an afterthought or actually as good as the CD output say?

It might be my cartridge but I'd say phono output is not as good as CD which is excellent . Have to turn volume up to halfway to hear much.

Hi, i have the yamaha nsf51 floorstanding speakers. they are 120w &6ohms. would they work with this amp? what setting would i have high or low?

Hi Matt,  I pulled the manual down from the Internet and on page 5 it shows what you need to do. In the manual it says speakers A 6 ohm or higher the switch needs to be high.
If you are not sure pull the manual down yourself to check. 
I have found this amplifier to be very good and I am running Wharfedale Diamond 230 floorstanders on my amp and they sound good now that the amp has run in.

I've noticed the higher and lower series of this amp include remote control.Does this amp not have r/c,as it looks to have a reciever panel?

Yes it does. Its has a silver front with a black rear battery compartment, part No:RAS13 (ZN04290) for the A-S301 model. It controls ALL amplifier functions including ON/OFF & Standby, Open/Close for a Yam compatible CD player including ON/OFF, ALL amplifier inputs, Compatible Yam Tuner with tuning and station presets and a full set of compatible CD transport controls. Finally it has amplifier volume control plus a neat "MUTE" button that mutes volume and restores it to your previously set level at a press of the mute button. A godsend if the phone rings or someone leans on your door bell! This remote is supplied with both silver and black model A-S501s
