Makes your paint more fluid whilst keeping the colour pigment dense.
I am new to water mixable oils and just feeling my way forwards. All of the different mediums seem fiddly and confusing but this thinner is the one I can't do without - if you look at the photo you will see why. These are three dots of Paines Grey. Left to right they are as it came out of the tube, mixed with water and mixed with thinner. The water reduces the amount of pigment on your brush giving thin coverage whereas the thinner makes the paint more fluid whilst retaining the density. I just use water for cleaning up now. Oh and the best tip I have had - use a pipette to get the thinner to the paint as this keeps the thinner cleaner than if you constantly dip in a brush no matter how clean you think it is - genius.

Enables, for me, a smother flow of Artisan paint
I use it in conjunction with W&N Artisan water mixable oils. I find it useful for applying the paint - it makes the paint smoother when using a brush. Just a dab is needed. I generally don't use it when applying paint with a painting knife - it doesn't seem to need it. I am not an expert on all the mediums etc available, but for me it works well.
