Does this product have any kind of protective cover to collect the scales removed?

No it does not have any protective cover as you use it scales drops on the chopping board. This product is very good though Thank you

How does it work? My son's really into cooking and i want to get him the best utensils.

The underside of the the Scaler has large solid metal prongs (a bit like brush bristles, but thicker and inflexible). You rub these prongs over the surface of the fish and it should remove the scales. I hope this helps. Kerfoots Madog Ltd
