A double-bill of sci-fi horror. In John Carpenter's 'The Thing' (1982), a research team in the Antarctic, led by R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell), discovers a spaceship buried beneath the ice, and becomes terrorised by the shape-changing monster that is housed within. In the 2011 prequel, the action is set on a research site in Antarctica three days before the action of the original story, the film focusing on the Norwegian camps that were the initial target of the alien invasion. When they discover an alien spacecraft on the site, science graduate Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and experienced researcher Dr Sander Halvorson (Ulrich Thomsen) disagree about how to act. When Dr Halvorson refuses to abandon his research, Kate teams up with tough Vietnam veteran Sam Carter (Joel Edgerton) to pursue the alien intruders by helicopter. Review: A Classic and a Prequel - When I bought this, the price was £14.99. I consider that price to be a bargain for two films. John Carpenters The Thing is one of the all time greatest horror movies ever made. Its practical effects still look great in this polished version and the disc is packed full of extras too. If you haven't seen this version and you enjoyed the modern prequel, this is a must buy. The Thing is a modern made film that tells the story that led to John Carpenters film. Although it blends practical special effects with modern CGI, it doesn't have the thrills and suspense of the movie made 30 years ago. It is not a bad movie, but it will always be compared to Carpenters classic. What it does do well is answer the questions posed in the 80's version and puts its own stamp on the "who is human or not" scenes. If you like suspenseful horror films, with great special effects, acting and scares, then you can't go wrong with this pack. John Carpenters film is worth the price alone (£12 at the time of this review). John Carpenter's The Thing 10/10 The Thing (2011) 7/10 Review: New Thing old Thing - I heard about this film some time before it was realsed into the cinema and although I thought it looked like it was going to be a good film to see. Unfortunately I read to many negative reviews that said the film was to much like the origanal so I decided not to go and see it. It was only when I saw this two disc edition that I decided to take a chance and buy it, after all I had wanted a Blu-ray copy of the original, so even if the new version was as bad as I had heard, it would have still have been money well spent. To my delite the new film is very, very good and does not deserve the bad press and reviews that it received. The film makers have done a very good job of filling in all of the blanks that was left by the original and have added to the overall story.Yes, some of the film does seem a bit similar to the original with regards to some of the characters, along with some to the situations they find themselves in. But all of the actors give a very good performance, and the film looks fantastic. Creature design and make up effects are very good and belivable, as is the sound and music. The extras on both discs are very good, with the ones on the original being slightly beter and more detailed. Picture and sound quality on both discs are excellent and show what Blu-ray can do. Overall an excellent buy, even more so if you don't yet own a high def copy of the original.

Fantastic quality, loaded with extras.
Fantastic budget set, great price. The Thing 1982 & it’s prequel from 2011, both on separate discs and in great quality. The picture has no grain which some older films have on a Blu-Ray. The odd white fleck in places but the films are vibrant & clear. On my TV the picture is letterboxed with black bars across the top & bottom of the screen, and the discs will not let you use the zoom function to fill the screen. The cover is bland, just black and white wording, and it did not come with a card slipcover/box but the discs are picture discs, and it’s whats inside that counts. Both discs are loaded with extras, some are a bit complicated, you can bookmark scenes at any point throughout the films then play those parts back. There’s a U-Control function which makes the special bonus features interact with the films. A bit too fiddly for me but if you love special features you’re in for a treat, especially for the low price. Recommended purchase.

Great film, excellent bluray for the price
I was a little late adopting bluray, having only just bought my player the other day. This is the second bluray I have purchased, and for the price is an absolute bargain. My main interest in the set was Carpenter's The Thing, though I have to admit to having a soft spot for the more recent version. So far I have only checked out the disc with Carpenter's version on it, and the picture and sound quality is phenomenal. Which is to be expected I suppose. It has quite a few extra features, and I especially like the picture in picture commentary that can be switched on. If you're a fan of Carpenter's The Thing and don't already own it on bluray, then I would highly recommend this set as it's a bargain price, especially if bought using Amazon Prime. At just over a fiver for a brand new bluray containing 2 films, one of them an absolute classic sci-fi/horror, you really cannot complain!
