My first Mac
I bough this through Apple Store using their Back to School offer.I run a lot of simulations/calculations using Matlab and similar numerical/statistical packages, so I was looking for a powerful computer. This is my first Mac (I previously used Windows), and so far I'm pleased with the purchase.Many of the reviews online will praise the quietness of the machine - it's true, Mac Pro is very quiet, any noise that I hear during the day (and night) is from my laptop. Also, reviews online state that the machine stays cool, but I found that when it's crunching numbers it does get rather warm. Since I don't touch Mac Pro, I don't really care about this, but I thought I'd write this since other reviews suggest that Mac Pro is always cool.There are some applications that come with Mac Pro (Mac's alternative to MS Office applications - Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and a few other applications, e.g. Garage Band). I am only interested in doing calculations using Matlab, so I didn't check them out.Mac Pro is fast, but that was expected given the price. Speaking of the price, I researched alternatives before purchasing Mac Pro and though it carries a hefty premium, the advantages of quality hardware and apple care outweighed the cons (high price). I wasn't sure which version to get - more cores could deliver better performance, but because some of my calculations are sequential they cannot be split among multiple cores... so I didn't want to pay more for the additional cores that I wouldn't use. Six cores is a nice balance between clock speed and the number of processors.Overall, I'm pleased with this Mac and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good workstation.
