KNOG Skink 4-LED Bicycle Light

Info missing from the specs: this light is about 5.6cm wide at its widest point.I've been using the black rubber / headlight version of the Knog Skink regularly for a month now in Chicago and its suburbs. I'm very happy with my purchase. When searching for a new light, I had three things I was looking for:1. It had to be bright enough to be seen by (obviously)2. It had to be mountless, i.e. not require a separate piece that attaches to the handlebars (I run bullhorn handlebars and didn't want any clutter during daylight)3. It had to accept AAA batteries (more on this later)This light was one of the very few on Amazon to meet those requirements. Thankfully, it didn't just meet my three requirements; it actually outdid them! Here's how:1. The light is much brighter than I expected, to the point where it can actually function as a make-shift "seeing" headlight (as opposed to "be seen" headlights that are merely meant to alert drivers to your presence). The fact that it has no separate mounting piece means that I can actually rotate the light downwards so it shines on the ground about 10-15 ft ahead of me. So on a dark side road with limited lighting, I'll swivel the light down so I can see any potholes or bumps ahead of me, then swivel it back up once I'm back on a well-lit street. I don't think doing this limits the visibility of the light very much, but I wouldn't recommend leaving it in this "down" position. It's meant to be facing drivers, not the road. But having this option was a pleasant surprise.2. Mounting and unmounting this light is extremely easy. Because it's made of rubber that wraps around the handlebars, it goes on and off pretty much any handlebars without needing to get out a screwdriver to attach the cumbersome and ugly handlebar mounts that most other lights need. You don't need to have a separate mount on each of your bikes, and you can lend it to a friend with ease. The light itself is low profile and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. The stretchy rubber that it's made of also ensures that this light doesn't slip downwards on the handlebars, as many other mount-type lights seem prone to do.3. This one's a little strange, but was very important to me. Previously I used a Planet Bike Spot headlight, but ended up chucking it because of the weird, expensive, short-life "N" batteries it uses. I wanted a front and rear light that would use identical, widely available, and most importantly, rechargeable batteries. I used to burn through stupid N batteries like no tomorrow. The setup I have now makes a lot more economical sense and is much more green-friendly. I use a Planet Bike Superflash rear light ( Planet Bike 3034-1 Blinky Superflash .5 Watt LED with 2 Red LED Tail Lights (Black/Clear Case) ) and the Knog Skink front light (both of which use AAA batteries), together with a four pack of Eneloop rechargeable AAAs ( SANYO NEW 1500 eneloop 4 Pack AAA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries ). I also found the Sony Cycle Energy battery charger ( Sony Cycle Energy BCG34HLD4KN Power Charger with 4 Pre-Charged 2000 mAh AA Batteries ), which I haven't needed to buy yet because the Eneloop batteries have lasted very long. I plan to purchase one once the batteries start to run down. Using this type of set-up saves money and helps me throw away less dead batteries.A last word with regard to other complaints I've seen in the reviews:1. Haven't ridden with it in a downpour, but light rain doesn't seem to have affected it at all. Not sure what kind of subaquatic riding other reviewers have been doing, but I don't think this light is any more prone to being ruined by water than most others.2. Replacing the batteries can be tricky and take some time. This is the only con I've experienced with this light. If done slowly and carefully, though, there's no danger of tearing the rubber.3. I've had zero problems with the light being angled weirdly. Not sure I understand this complaint - the light is easy to position correctly because it doesn't require futzing around with a mount.Overall, I highly recommend this light. Pick up rechargeable batteries, too! And, as always, ride safe with lights and a helmet.

I had a black one that I bought about 7 years ago when I started riding regularly. I use this as a front signal light, running on flashing mode. When we got my wife a road bike to start riding, I bought some imitation ones. They are about the half of the price that came in two packs (one red and one white - one flash white light and one flash red light). I never installed them since my wife almost do not ride at night.We have recently purchase another two bikes for us to ride around town, I opened the package and installed them. It worked at first then stopped working. I took it out to fix the contact and the switch click button fell out, there goes the white light. The red light would work, only if I tightening the screw on the battery lid half way....even then it would fire intermittently. Since lights are so important for night riding, I decided they are just not worse fixing and installing on my bikes, they are going straight to the recycling yard.Since I really enjoyed my Knog light, I went back to my road bike and realized this is the KNOG brand and bought this one for my bike's Fuji Silhouette Disc 1 road bike. The red really accented her bike well. I bought two other KNOG dual LED light for my road bike and my new ride around town bike. My old black KNOG 4 LED is going to go on my wife's road bike. She does not like to see the flashing like so this style suits her better. I am in different so I went with the smaller newer style.Please note that I don't use these lights for road illumination. I leave that to my 2 watts Planet light. I like these as well as the planet lights because they use AAA batteries. I don't want USB charging lithium batteries....I want to be able to find some on the road, if they ever go on me while riding.PLEASE BE CAREFUL, don't buy the wrong ones, These are the read deal. If you buy the other imitations, you will regret it just like I did, especially if you are on the road, at night.....stuck without any light, to warm other motorists about your presence.Stay safe and Happy Riding !!

like the boomer tail light I reviewed, the skink works well, but falls just a little short. I bought this along with the boomer as a 'be seen' light set that would keep my road bike looking race. my first surprise was how large it was. I had had the frog previously and appreciated its simplicity and scale. the skink is big and eats up a lot of bar-top realestate. the plus side is that it throws enough light to actually see by. it also has three modes: steady, slow flash and a seizure-inducing party strobe flash mode. I would avoid this one. for my type of riding - urban with a mix of ocean views - this is perfectly fine. mostly I need to avoid getting creamed by late-nighters or early commuters. if you live in the country I would suggest a real light. I also have a niterider USB which is great for seeing and being seen.my main beef with the skink is, beyond its size, is its difficult to locate on/off button. it is positioned problematically near the post that helps hold the silicone skin in place. it is difficult to articulate when stopped and almost impossible while riding. I have to keep looking at it to adjust where I am pressing... this is even more of a problem now that I have moved the light to my left fork leg. this frees up my bar top, but means I can only operate the light from a full stop. it would be considerably better were it positioned like the frog; on its broad top rather than the crowded end.these are, in my estimation, minor points as the lights do what I need them to. I really like the simplicity of the knog products and their use of the silicone skin is clever and functional. the led lighting elements are bright enough for urban and semi-urban riding and fill in nicely between the see and be-seen categories.

The housing for this light is one continuous piece of silicone, which makes it pretty good in wet weather.Brighter than you might expect from a simple bicycle light.The batteries that came with it lasted about 2 weeks.

Its so great, I've bought 3 so far! I've got one for the back, and one for the front (and one for my wife). Sadly Amazon.co.uk does not sell the front skink, so I had to buy that from the sister site amazon.de.The rear lights have 5 different settings - one continuous on (ie. all four LEDs on at the same time), and four different blinking settings.The front lights have 3 different settings - one continuous, and two blinking.I find them to be quite bright, and good enough for commuting in the city. And they're easy to pop on and off when I lock up. And small enough to fit in your pocket (if you only carry one).I use the rear one even during the day. This makes me more visible to motorists. I always use it on the slowest blinking setting. This makes the batteries last longer. And I find that the slower blinking actually makes motorists more cautious when passing me. (Perhaps they mistake faster blink lights for a faster moving bike? Who knows, but this is my experience).I have had them for about six months now, and the batteries are still going strong. The batteries are AA so no problems finding replacements when the time comes.I've had no problems regarding moisture. I have ridden in the rain a couple of times, but don't make a habit of it.One minor gripe, I keep the lights in my backpack and the rubber does attract fine dust or lint. It does wipe off, but its a little annoying.If you do buy two, one for the front and one for the back, get them in different colours, so you know which is which. And perhaps opt for the transparent one. In one of the online bike mags (I think Bikeradar) they stated that the clear knog was visible from the sides as well as from directly in front or behind.All in all, a great product!

機能的にはまずまずです。シリコン製なのでホコリがついて取れにくいのは仕方のないところでしょう。電池の消費も結構早いかもしれないですが、ほかの商品も似たりよったりかと思います。

電池がいれずらい事が難点だが、デザインは良いのとそれなりの明るさも有り、気に入った。

通勤車に使用しています。毎日、帰り道で３０分程度の使用です。この手の製品を求められる方は皆さん同じ目的だと思いますが、夜間の視認性アップを狙っての購入です。気になる視認性ですが、視認距離６００ｍを謳っているだけあってかなり目立ちます。ただ近くで見るとかなり眩しいので、発光部があまり上向きにならないよう注意したほうがいいと思います。ただし車からのどう見えているかがよくわかりませんがヘッドライトの光量とは比べるべくもありませんので”見えているだろう”と言う過信は禁物です。夜間に視認しやすい、明るい色の服装を心がけるなどの配慮は必要かと思います。また歩行者についても同様です。これだけビカビカ光らせていても、見ていない人は全く見ていませんので（汗点滅モードだと１週間経たないうちに電池の警告灯が点いてしまいましたので、今はフラッシュモードで使っています。ただ電池の警告灯については、あまり正確ではないようですのであくまで目安と考えた方が良いみたいです。発光部の光量は、新品の電池で使い始めて１週間しないうちに若干落ちました。製品のせいというよりは電池の特性に影響されているようですのでこれについては、電池を数種類試してからでないとわかりません。使用していたのが冬場でしたので、気温が高くなるこれからの時期で様子見です。スイッチがサイドのランプ横にあるため、冬場手袋をしたままだと押すのに苦労します。デザイン的にはあまり主張せず、取り付け場所の自由度も高いので便利です。YouTubeなどにスマートな装着方法がありましたので真似して付けています。（結構イイ感じでしたのでご参考まで）総評としては、若干お高い感がありますが良い仕事をしてくれていると思いますので星４つです。
