Very enlightening
It's an incredible book. I started studying shotokan karate in the 80s and graded under the Japanese sensies Enoida and Ohta, trained with all the big names from back in the day, other Japanese from the JKA and the likes of UK karate pioneers like Dave Hazard, Frank Brennan, Terry O'Neil etc. So I thought I knew all the traditional shotokan techniques, then I read this book and there is stuff I'd never heard of, like Funakoshi says you shouldn't curl your index finger with the rest of your fingers when making a fist?!?!?There is lots in this book which shows how much has changed in shotokan since karate was first introduced to Japan, a worthwhile read for any Karate Nerd.

An excellent translation of the original Japanese edition.
I have compared sections of this work to the original Japanese and it is the most reliable English-language translation available.

and much better.
Unlike the 2013 version from a different source, this includes bunkai and self defense that should have been included. This is a much more complete version, and much better.
