Really quite excellent
As I'm now approaching middle age, the sheer power of heavy rock and metal alone doesn't quite get the adrenaline pumping round the body like it used to when I was in my youth, so it takes a record that contains exceptional talent and depth of composition for me to really enjoy a metal album these days. Alter Bridge, in my opinion, are one of the best mainstream metal bands plying their trade today, with the vocals of Myles Kennedy and guitar of Mark Tremonti shining brightly in an altogether impressive group of musicians. This whole album, with its singular bonus track, Last Of Our Kind, is over seventy minutes long and, although it does threaten to overstay its welcome a little (perhaps a little more quality over quantity would have resulted in a better album overall), there are enough extraordinary songs to carry the whole project along quite confidently. In truth, it would really be tough to pick any individual song on this record which didn't quite cut the mustard... it's all very listenable indeed. There are more than a handful of great moments on The Last Hero. It opens with Show Me A Leader, a track with the kind of neo-classical introduction you may expect from a pomp-rock band such as Muse which develops into a punchy, stomping rocker with a frenetic riff and blistering guitar solo. The Other Side, with its meaty guitar riff and dense vocal harmonies on the chorus reminds me of Ozzmosis-era Ozzy Osbourne; add into the mixture a gothic-sounding bridge and you have a near-perfect metal anthem. This Side Of Fate is nothing short of magnificent; a multi-layered, beautifully-composed and performed six minute epic and Island Of Fools throbs and pulsates hard enough to get your heart beating in time with music whilst Tremonti takes your soul elsewhere with the wizardry of his playing. The classy, muscular (yet pleasingly melodic) title track provides an exceedingly satisfying conclusion to the album, ensuring The Last Hero end as well as it begins. The bonus track, Last Of Our Kind, is a worthy enough addition to the album, but certainly feels tagged on. All-in-all, this is probably my favourite heavy rock/metal album of 2016 and, as my purchases in the genre become fewer and fewer, it's good to know that there are still metal bands out there that satisfy my musical mind as much as Alter Bridge do. Really quite excellent.

The Last Hero.
I was just getting back into playing the guitar and decided to buy a new one, why I don't know but I am glad I did. I was looking on Ebay and Amazon and came across a Tremonti PRS and thought that looks like just the guitar for me, it was like a Gibson Les Paul with the bridge of a Strat ( at the time I didn't know who Mark Tremonti was ). I got the guitar it is the SE version but what a guitar, it looks great and sounds great and if the Se version is this good how good must the USA one be?After getting the guitar I started looking into who Mark Tremonti was and started listening to his music, bought The Last Hero and I don't think there is a bad track on the album, great playing, great songs, great vocals from Myles Kennedy ( and guitar )It turns out that it is one of the best albums I have heard in a while and Marks playing is up there with the best, I was a bit of a Paul Gilbert fan but I think Mark is as good.A bit of an unusual way of getting into a band it all seems to be back to front, you normally listen to the band before buying the guitar. If your a rock fan then you can't go wrong would well recommend.

Alter Bridge do it again - a heavy album, full of join-in hooks
Where to start? Alter Bridge - a band that thousands love, and yet so many have never heard of. They deserve far more success - and yet they still fill large arenas, so all must be well.I loved this album from about the third listen. First time I played it I thought it was a bit ordinary. Everything changed once I got into it.Tremonti and Kennedy really can write some hooky heavy songs. We will all have our favourites and I don't think anyone will care about those too much, but suffice it to say, if you like Alter Bridge, there's nothing but happiness for you in The Last Hero.Enjoy

... with most Alter Bridge albums I found this really good, without being brilliant
As with most Alter Bridge albums I found this really good, without being brilliant. But it's growing on me, again as with earlier albums. If anything it perhaps veers toward being a bit overproduced compared to earlier albums, but it's very, very good nonetheless. My favourite album remains their first, and my overall favourite track 'Blackbird'. I don't think this album is a threat to either of those, but it's well worth getting. Highly recommended.
