Yikes, Ticklysaurus! Paperback – July 30, 2015

I read this book at the library and had to put it back on the shelf because I didn't like some of the messages in it for my three-year old. To be honest, she liked the book.. she likes dinosaurs, she likes tickling, it should have been a great match but there were some messages that I didn't like. Ticklysaurus makes one other dinosaur pee themselves and that dinosaur looks sad but ticklysaurus isn't sorry, they just go after their next victim. A tricertops specifically asks not to be tickled on her horns but ticklysaurus doesn't listen... and more. In a world where we are learning more and more about teaching consent at an early age I did not think this supported those values.

I just want to warn parents of this book. I've never felt like I've had to write a review before, but this book did it for me. It seems like this would have been a good opportunity to teach children that we need to listen when people tell you to stop, but each time the characters tell him to stop he doesn't. One particular instance of this that left me speechless was when a dinosaur was hiding from ticklysaurus because it didn't want to be tickled, but he continued to tickle the dinosaur on the butt. Another time he tickled a dinosaur until he peed. Honestly, the whole book seemed a little rapey.

This bright and bold read had me in giggles – I knew that tickling was involved in the story from the title, but just what happens was a surprise (which is good to see in picture books) It makes it slightly interactive, and given the exciting nature of the book I suspect that this isn't a winding down read before bed!I received a copy from the publisher for review on my blog Nayu's Reading Corner http://nayusreadingcorner.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/yikes-ticklysaurus-by-pamela-butchart.html
