As accurate as a doctor’s or laboratory test, the coeliac disease test kit identifies whether IgA antibodies to tissue transglutaminase (tTG) – a key marker for coeliac disease – are present in a small blood sample taken quickly and easily from your finger tip.Coeliac (or celiac) disease is a lifelong, auto-immune disease caused by gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The presence of gluten in the diet of someone with coeliac disease causes the body’s immune system to produce antibodies which attack the lining of the small intestine. When the lining is damaged, the body cannot absorb the nutrients it needs from food, leading to a wide range of symptoms which are easily confused with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) such as weight loss, vomiting and diarrhoea.Undiagnosed and untreated, coeliac disease can contribute to an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, infertility and certain types of cancer.The test was developed by scientists in Finland and since then, numerous clinical trials have shown that the simple blood test kit gives equivalent results to laboratory blood tests that also measure the same IgA tTG antibodies, EMA antibodies and correlates well with intestinal biopsy.Diagnosing coeliac disease can often take over 10 years because it is difficult to relate the symptoms to the cause without specific tests being performed. Women in particular, who have lived with undiagnosed coeliac disease, are at considerable risk of osteoporosis because of chronic malabsorption of calcium in their earlier years. This risk increases the longer the condition is undiagnosed – an even greater reason for early screening.Note: Starting a strict gluten free diet before being tested for coeliac disease can cause false results.
