Thought provoking and poignant
I particularly liked this film as I was a foster carer for many years and felt the makers of this film had good knowledge of the care system, which although made in France seems similar to UK. Usually homes, carers and the system are portrayed as being evil doers but this film was very positive. The children were fairly represented, the bully, the abused, the neglected. All children I have encountered over the years . The reasons these kids were damaged was hinted it and very true to life. The friendships that were forged were touching and sensitive. There is also comedy here too in just the right quantity. I loved this film and after seeing it on TV felt compelled to buy it. All my family have liked it too and if you are a carer or an adopter your children may like it too. Younger children will probably not ‘get’ a lot of it and as alcoholics feature and child abuse is mentioned it is really aimed at older children and adults.

Stunning stopmotion
This stopmotion animated movie is up there with the work of Tim Burton/Henry Selick and Nick Park not only in its technical brilliance, but also in the way that very dark, heartrending themes can be presented in a form once removed from reality so that they become accessible to a (not too) young audience. The characters and their back stories are presented in sufficient depth to be meaningful, but with the help of some suspension of disbelief, not too brutally realistic to be truly bleak and miserable. It's colourful and appealing to watch and listen to, from both an adult and a young person's point of view, with touching details, such as Courgette/Icare's items representing his parents - an empty beer can for his mother and a kite with a picture of a masked, superman character drawn on it for his father. I don't think I missed anything by watching the version dubbed in English, but I loved the French musical soundtrack. Don't overlook this one assuming it's just for kids!

My Life as a Courgette, is what real life can be
The French certainly know how to make a great animation, like the British and the Americans. This is spoken in English, but the music is still in French, and most of the text is in French too. It gives it a European feel. The story itself is about a young boy, Courgette, of 10 yrs old, that loses his drunken violent mother in a domestic accident. Courgette then ends in a home for children where he basically shares a journey to heal past wounds. I will not tell you the rest of the film, but it is certainly worth a watch, and it is, I think, child friendly, with an educational wink to what life can really be like. There are hints to love, and hints to violence, but it is told from the perspective of a 10 yrs old, just in case you wish as a parent to watch the film first.

Highly recommended
This is a bitter-sweet, sad but funny sort of animated film that deals with some really painful issues. It does so in a very matter-of-fact way and avoids being overly judgmental and preachy. Animation is amazing and the characters' faces hilarious. I really enjoyed the film - nice mix of harsh reality, hope and humour.

A simple, touching tale.....beautifully rendered.
As a male pensioner and a very keen fan of film with animation holding a special place in my heart, I found 'Courgette' to be an affecting tale, touchingly told. Charming backdrops, empathetic characters with loss, friendship and loyalty handled beautifully. The French have a distinct way with animation, which I generally adore. The patience and dedication required to produce stop-start animation boggles my mind. Some folk are just SO clever. Heartily recommend.

Adult themes
Kids liked it but there are some adult themes here. Not for younger children.

A Delightful Film
Generally I'm not a great fan of animation, but I found 'My Life as a Courgette' - covering a great range of moods and feelings in a most humane and sensitive fashion - a truly delightful film, which I recommend to anyone without hesitation. I can understand why previous reviewers wanted more, and thus found the film a little on the short side, but for me - at a time when so many contemporary films are dragged out unnecessarily for two and a quarter or two and a half hours - I thought its brevity added to its appeal.

Fantastischer Film!
