My old chickens wont touch the oyster shell that Ive bought. Assume because its so big. Is your grit large?

Our hens are about 18 months old and take a bit of this mixed grit but some of the larger stuff is ignored. We do not seem however to be getting the problems with soft shells that we used to get with our last batch of free range ex-commercial layers. Hope this helps, regards, Rupert

Can this be used on run floor

Yes but it is actually for the hens to eat to help them make calcium for their egg shells. This product seems to consist of small stones with a small amount of crushed sea shells. The stones end up on the floor with the hens only ingesting the sea shells. I will not buy this product again.

I have read it can be used to reduce the acidity of ponds. Do you agree?

Hi regards your question, I know that the contents of the bags have a lot of shells broken into small pieces with the grit. The shells provide Calcium whilst breaking down, so potentially would help to reduce acidity. Charcoal is much better, but perhaps your aware of this ? Regards Peter

Hi is this ok for ducks as well as chickens.

An extract from an article on duck digestion - "Once the food moves through the upper digestive tract, it enters the ventriculus, more commonly known as the gizzard. This thickly muscled organ essentially functions as a duck's "teeth." The ventriculus often contains grit (sand or small stones), which aids in mechanically breaking down large food items." So it looks like ducks will benfit from this grit in their diet. HTH

Brilliant value for money

I love this product. I use it as a top mulch for my pots now I no longer have chickens. Couldn’t resist ordering another bag. It goes a long way, excellent value for money, keeps the slugs at bay, lasts a long time & looks really pretty with the bits of shell. My hens loved this too to be fair and we’re always healthy and I never had any crop issues. Great fast and efficient delivery service too. Well done guys.

Good value and good quality

Bought this to both use as a replacement for horticultural grit for topping pots and also for the wild birds on their feeding station. Will probably be needing more when lifting up plants in the spring, delivery is far better than driving to the garden centre and having to carry it. Great value

Great stuff

I love this . Good for the chickens . Some comments that the grit is too large / too small. I don’t understand these comments. My bantams happily lap this up as does my leghorn. Also, great for dressing my cacti and it looks good at the bottom of my aquarium! What’s not to like ? Will definitely be purchasing again.
