Operation Dunkirk [DVD]

Don't blame the film, blame yourselves!
So, twenty-eight ONE STAR reviews in the four weeks since the release of this movie! The irony that people are bemoaning the absence of research in this film is hysterical, considering they've just whipped out their credit or debit card for something that they haven't done even the faintest level of background checking on.A cursory three minute IMDb check will reveal that it was made by The Asylum who have a long history of low-budget filmmaking, and frequently release similarly-titled movies to contemporary blockbusters in order to capitalise on hard-of-thinking individuals who just purchase films based on title and cover-art alone! As someone who watches low-budget films for escapist pleasure, and not to mercilessly nitpick, I felt it was a decently produced film that certainly held my interest for ninety minutes. A simple story, a great location in Indiana, and a good camaraderie between the principal leads, ensured a similar to vibe to many of those classic Macaroni combat movies that came out of Italy / Philippines in the mid-late eighties.

Absolute Tosh!
This must be the worst film that I have had the misfortune to see in decades! It is so bad as to be laughable. To begin with, the title is totally misleading. The film has really nothing to do with the famous evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk in 1940 .On the contrary, some English soldiers are not to be rescued from the beaches but are sent inland, behind enemy lines, to retrieve an algorithm that will assist the Allies to develop radar. This silly plot illustrates how badly the film-makers have researched their theme. Radar was invented as early as 1926 and was in regular use before the events of Dunkirk! As to the film itself, the dialogue is truly dreadful, the acting is wooden and the direction is woeful. The film is littered with inaccuracies that are too numerous to list here. We have the usual stock characters: a sinister Nazi officer, in impeccable uniform, who shoots and tortures his way through the movie until mown down by a squadron of spitfires; a big-bosomed Resistance fighter who speaks a mixture of French and English in a terrible accent; and a heroic, but badly made-up English lieutenant who leads his gallant band of warriors into action. Needless to say, the lieutenant falls for the mademoiselle - who has cleverly memorised the algorithm - and, before she is whisked away in a biplane, he promises to meet her later in London. The film ends with our three surviving heroes still behind enemy lines, standing beside an immaculate airstrip. "God Save the King!" one of them intones. We hope that they all get home safely. For a moment, I thought that the film might have been a tongue-in-cheek send-up of the standard WW2 action movie, but nothing in the publicity suggests that it should not be taken quite seriously. The DVD features no extras and there are no subtitles to assist the hard of hearing. My advice? Avoid this film and save yourself both time and money!

So bad it’s brilliant
So bad it’s brilliant. the uniforms are clearly a job lot from a couple of Army & Navy stores. The script is a joy for it’s awfulness, the plot is daft and the acting - wow. This could be the perfect student drinking game film. To my amazement I couldn’t stop watching (and laughing)

Historically inaccurate!
Only got about 10 minutes in;and had to turn off!Wish I had read the reviews before I bought it! American badge jeeps in 1940! Parachute boys running around! They didn’t exist until 1941.I could go on, but others have already done it….

Talk about "Alternative history"...
OK--since when were the Americans even involved in WW 2 at the time of Dunkirk--that is such an incredible interpretation of history, when the Nazi SS officer asks, "Where are the Americans?" Indeed where were they in those terrible years 1939--Dec. 1941? Like Waldo missing!!!! It took Pearl Harbor to get them into the conflict meanwhile on "Lease Loan" they provided supplies. The "Lease Loan" --"The final payment was actually six years late, the British Government having suspended payments due in the years 1956, 1957, 1964, 1965, 1968 and 1976 because the exchange rates were seen as impractical." Also as far as radar went it was a British invention and the Nazis did not know about it until much later. Those "errors" or perversions of history all occur within the first 10 minutes of the first episode we could not stomach any more. The insignia on the British soldiers was incorrect--dear God most gumsuckers such as my husband and I have lived with WW 2 in our parents and read widely and thought we were in for a good series--what utter rubbish a travesty. That era is so rich in history, acts of courage, cowardice, cruelty subtle and not so subtle, betrayal and loyalty that there is simply no need to destroy history and create a Trumpish nightmare of "alternative WW 2 reality."
