An idiosyncratic, richly illustrated guide to Britain's rivers, seas and shores, for everyone who loves the water and the natural world - a Norwegian Wood for Britain's waters This is a book for those who want to understand better how the waters surrounding us affect our daily lives, how it imperceptibly but crucially shapes our actions, and has shaped our landscape for millenia. It's for anyone who knows and loves our coast, and who wants to understand, discover, surf, or sail it better. Inspired by his own witnessing of the power of the sea through travelling around Britain's coastline in a panel van with his young family, William Thomson tells the story of the cycles of the sea. He combines a lyrical, passionate narrative with graphically beautiful renderings of the main forms of water which affect Britain: Rip, Rapids, Swell, Stream, Tide, Wave, Whirlpool, Tsunami. The Book of Tides is a book for all of us who feel the pull of the sea and the tug of the tide. Review: A beautiful book - I thought this book was brilliant. I read it - almost - cover to cover - and was so impressed by everything about it, the format, the simplicity and clarity of style, the illustrations, the content. I found it utterly refreshing. I never thought I should find myself so engrossed in a book about the tides. It is fascinating, informative, amusing, practical and very lovely. William clearly has a passion for the sea, for getting out there in the wild, for risking the elements and taking the plunge, in so many ways. Review: Fantastic book, full of surprise facts! - I first saw this book in a shop and was hesitant to buy it but was drawn in by the sharp illustrations and easy reading. Turns out, itโs full of amazing facts and information for anyone interested in our coastal areas and for the more serious sports enthusiasts- I now have an improved knowledge of tide/wave/moon/weather phases which will improve my surfing๐ So good, I bought another copy on line for a friend!

Interesting insight
A very good read despite a rather self indulgent chapter about surfing.

The next best thing to being there.
I enjoyed reading this book, itโs not huge, but there is enough to satisfy curiosity as it is packed with so much information. What I really liked is: it doesnโt wander off into obscure jargon, it stays focused and it never patronises; it keeps things simple but never boring. I will certainly reread it, because when you canโt be with the sea, itโs the next best thing.

Great present for any water and coastal sport enthusiast!
Bought as a grift for my husband, who is a water sport fanatic. Loves everything from surfing, to rowing to swimming and plenty in between. Heโs found it a fascinating read and keeps treating the family to fascinating little snippets from this book.

Brilliant and beautiful
I have lived by the sea for most of my adult life and this book simply and beautifully explains things I have always wondered; what makes waves happen, how to spot a rip current and why tidal bores flow up some rivers. It's a practical book, beautifully explained with lots of illustrations on every page. Highly recommended.

Don't buy the Kindle version
It's an interesting and pretty book. But I made the mistake of buying the Kindle version, and the digitisation is absolute rubbish. It insists on being two pages to a screen, and unless you are 8 you will be unable to read the text. Not the author's fault, I guess, but a pain nevertheless. I haven't been able to get to grips with the actual content but from a helicopter view it looks great.

Great illustrations, excellent resource.
I found this book on an outdoor swimming group. SUPER resource for swimmers, and those interested in the sea.
