Platinum does not tarnish or lose it's luster it is like gold it is not reactive to the air or water, so you do not need to use this.

Would it be OK to cut the cloth in half to make two smaller cloths?

Yes it is quite large. I've cut mine into 4. It actually makes it a lot easier to clean smaller pieces ie jewellery if the cloth is smaller. Hope this helps

Is it safe to use on sterling silver earring posts?

You can wash the area afterwards
