What is bark beetle wood? Bark beetles reproduce in the inner bark of trees. Most, however, live in dead, weakened, or dying hosts. Scientists often compare this insect to a grain of rice or mouse droppings. An adult mountain pine beetle lays her eggs under the bark. On her way, she disperses fungi that turn the trees' tissue into food for her babies, eventually killing the tree. In undisturbed forests, bark beetles serve the purpose of hastening the recycling and decomposition of dead and dying wood and renewing the forest. A few species, however, are aggressive and can develop large populations that invade and kill healthy trees and are therefore known as pests. Prolonged droughts and shorter winters have spurred bark beetles to kill billions of trees in what's likely the largest forest insect outbreak ever recorded. What you may not know is that some of the most beautiful patterns (tunnels, passageways, or galleries) are created by these little monsters. These lovely passageways are what encouraged me to begin turning bark beetle wood into lamps. Look closely at the photos of the bark beetle galleries for this lamp. This lamp contains six bark beetle wood or branch cuttings. The largest cutting is approximately 2" in diameter, 10.5" long and 16" tall (without shade or bulb). It weighs 4.1 pounds (more when shipped). It has the common medium E26 light bulb screw base. It's yellow cord is a little over six feet long. The lamp has a contemporary push through socket. The gold base is six inch in diameter. The lamp you receive will be the one pictured here. This is a distinctive piece of California Flora that you will be proud to display for many years to come. It is most commonly used in a rustic area such as a cabin, den, or treehouse. Sometimes something beautiful can come from a destructive pest.
