Product Description Fasten your seat belt, it's gonna be a bumpy ride. Quentin Tarantino pays homage to his B-movie favourites in this adrenaline fuelled tale of a psychotic stuntman's serial attempts to stalk hot babes in his supercharged, 'death proof' Chevy. Having already dealt with one set of women in Texas, Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) moves on to Tennessee, where he targets another posse of head-turning women. But this time Mike finds that he's bitten off more than he can chew, as the three girls (Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, and Zoe Bell) give as good as they get, culminating in an 18-minute car duel (without CGI), which references some of the classic chase movies of the past. As with any Tarantino film, there are numerous nods to pop culture, along with razor-sharp dialogue that just keeps coming. desertcart.co.uk Review Loud, fast, and proudly out of control, Grindhouse is a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Tarantino's Death Proof is the mellower of the two, relatively speaking; it's wordier (as to be expected) and rife with pulp/comic book posturing and eminently quotable dialogue. It also features a terrific lead performance by Kurt Russell as a homicidal stunt man whose weapon of choice is a souped-up car. Tarantino's affection for his own dialogue slows down the action at times, but he does provide showy roles for a host of likable actresses, including Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rose McGowan, Sydney Poitier, and newcomer Zoe Bell, who was Uma Thurman's stunt double in Kill Bill. Detractors may decry the rampant violence and latch onto a sexist undertone in Tarantino's feature, but for those viewers who grew up watching these types of films in either theaters or on VHS, such elements will be probably be more of a virtue than a detrimental factor. --Paul Gaita Review: Great film - Great Quentin Tarantino movie. When a Stuntman Calls
American film critic Manny Farber once described the auteur theory thusly: "A bunch of guys standing around trying to catch some director pushing art up into the crevices of dreck." That quote perfectly suits Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, an eccentric tribute to exploitation films which was first released as one half of Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror providing the other half. Removed from that context and presented as a standalone work Death Proof feels like two films sewn together, not least because its first act is shot using grainy, scratched film - an homage to low-budget sleazoid movies - while its second has the crisp, sharp colours of modern cinema. Personally I like this jump in styles; there's also a black-and-white segment, and one of the joys of Tarantino's films is their experiments with technique, whether it's through non-linear narratives or varied visuals. The plot, as befitting a slasher, is very simple. Two quartets of women cross paths with Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell), a psychopath who kills by causing highway collisions in his "death proof" car. The second group, including stuntwomen Kim (Tracie Thoms) and Zoe (Zoe Bell) and make-up artist Abernathy (Rosario Dawson), fight back when he attacks them. Rose McGowan, who starred in Planet Terror, shows up here too as a bar patron who befriends Mike, and Sydney Tamiia Poitier (Sidney Poitier's daughter) plays a radio DJ; Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd and Mary Elizabeth Winstead round out the main cast. Kurt Russell gives a good performance as Mike, an ageing stuntman. The character feels like a leftover from an old world. When he asks McGowan how she thinks car crashes are filmed she says CGI; he recalls an age where they were real, no digital trickery involved. He's not especially deep or poignant, but he's interesting. He represents a tension between old and new cinema, an age of realism and an age of special effects. This is where you can catch Tarantino "shoving art up into the crevices of dreck": shallow and sadistic as he is, Mike works in a metaphorical way which would have been above the slasher killers of yore. Jason Voorhees was just a mute in a mask. The women are enjoyable; I liked the sense of friendship between them which Tarantino's script conveys. Thoms and Bell, who's essentially playing herself (she's a stuntwoman in real life), are delightful. Thoms is a sassy blaxploitation heroine, Bell's her Kiwi colleague. Their meeting with Mike ends in a thrilling twenty minute car chase which uses music and editing to perfection. Death Proof may not be Tarantino's smartest or thematically richest film, but it's a damn entertaining thrill ride across America.

Surprisingly great
I read recently that Quentin Tarantino slated Death Proof as the worst movie he ever made which is also a sentiment shared by many audiences, I for the life of me do not understand that and really enjoyed it. I am a fan of Tarantino, I was a huge fan when I was younger and loved Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction (which has been overkilled), Jackie Brown was ok, Kill Bill 1&2 has and will age the best while still maintaining Tarantinos positive hallmarks and inglorious Basterds for me would be his best if it weren't for the soundtrack, Death Proof for me has the most 're-watchability' Death Proof has all the nuances of a 70's exploitation film, it only has 3 real scenes of an exploitation film but the retro 70's look and feel is there but it's set in modern day with some references and phones being the only give away. I think this film didn't do better because is because apart from the group dialogue it doesn't feel very 'Tarantino' but that shouldn't put any movie fans off, also I think his audience was put off because his films are usually very male centric (kill Bill and Jackie Brown are kind of exceptions, but not really) all the main characters in this apart from antagonist Kurt Russell playing 'stuntman Mike' are women. I'll say that film fans should get this and Tarantino should have a think about it.
