Live At Star Club

A very weak recording but what are you to do when it was recorded with early microphones and other weak recording equipment. At least you can tell how great he was.

I got the vinyl. I read somewhere that the sound engineer had limited time and equipment with which to prepare, and that he used one stereo microphone for the crowd and other mono microphones placed close to each instrument or amplifier cabinet. I don't hear that setup, except for the crowd. Photo look like Lewis got one for vocals, and based on a cable hanging down maybe one for the piano. The sound is veiled. Sounds more than a few generations from the original tape. On all but two cuts it sounds like Lewis and the others are 50 feet away. The guitar is lost, as I don't think there was a microphone nearby, but that instrument was never much part of the classic Lewis songs anyway. I would like to have heard what was dropped from this release and maybe more of the crowd banter with Lewis. Again, I got the vinyl. No production notes at all, no significant photo other than the front cover. I see the CD has an 8-page booklet. It might have revelations. OK, it was recorded under tough conditions in 1964. That rant done, there is no question that Lewis showed up to play that night. Lots of energy, and the crowd is into it. A Hank Williams song provided a needed change-up from the rockers. Four stars is maybe a little generous here. High energy, Lewis is in a great mood and in good form in terms of his vocals (piano good, not great), and the crowd adds another dimension--but not the best live album of all time, and not much sonic reason I can see to buy the vinyl version, although it is well-made, 180 grams.

A reviewer, for a very prestigious magazine, once described this record as: "Not a record, but a crime scene. One in which The Killer slaughters all the competition, it sounds like one long convulsion." Who am I to argue with that? Mr. Lewis and his crew that night, The Nashville Teens, scream on into the end of an absolutely manic, demonic, possessed, (pick your fave word) version of "Long Tall Sally" and then Jerry has to BRING THINGS DOWN with "Whole Lotta Shakin??" What the actual heck's going on here? Of course by the time "Whole Lotta Shakin'" clocks in things are right back to the maniacal levels there were at when the ended the last song. This thing's been called, "The greatest live rock and roll recording ever made." That's absolutely true. There's more energy here than down at your local power company. I've listened to this album countless times and every time I get to the end I shake my head, laugh and think... Nobody, but NOBODY follows the Killer. Do yourself a favor, buy this record. Listen to it really loud and get ready to ROCK baby! This is as good as it gets.

Fantastic music and prompt delivery. Everything as advertised.

The 2 reasons it gets 4 stars is that, 1. it's too short and 2. the back up sound is a bit thin, I realize this recording has some years on it but it would be nice to have it re-mastered and give the Nashville Teens a bit more presence. It does rock and has been in the car cd player for at least a couple of weeks. Worth the money.

I love the energy of this performance and the selection of music. This was undoubtedly one of the best rock-n-roll sets of all time. Jerry Lee came to play that night and was at the top of his game. I wish I would have been there. Since I was not there, I’m grateful that there’s a recording. I enjoyed this CD and I’m proud to own it. I just wish the recording quality had been better. The sound is thin.

I don't buy many CD's these days but if you are an old rock and roll fan.This is a great cd

My ears were bleeding!

Einem Live-Album von Jerry Lee Lewis aus dem Jahr 1964 könnte man in zweierlei Hinsicht mit Skepsis begegnen: Zum einen, weil er seinen großen kommerziellen Erfolg im Bereich Rock'n'Roll zwischen 1956 und 1958 hatte, zum anderen, weil man bei einem Live-Album von 1964 eine schlechte Klangqualität erwarten könnte.Zu letzterem ist zu sagen, dass dieses Album damals anerkannt neue Maßstäbe in Punkto Klangqualität setzte. Es übertrifft zeitgleiche und oft auch spätere Liveaufnahme bei weitem, u. a. läßt es auch das Album "The greatest Live Show on earth" deutlich hinter sich, das für den amerikanschen Markt aufgenommen wurde, weil das Starclub-Album in Amerika schwer erhältlich war. Jerrys Stimme und sein Klavierspiel sind sehr klar und dominant, auch Bass und Schlagzeug kommen gut rüber. Nur die E-Gitarre klingt bei Soli teils etwas dünn. Dafür wird die Atmosphäre, vor allem die Reaktionen des Publikums, erstaunlich gut eingefangen. Kurz: ein Live-Album, bei dem man kaum glauben kann, dass es vor 44 Jahren aufgenomen wurde.Zum musikalischen Teil: Der Killer, wie Jerry Lee auch genannt wird, war bei Live-Auftritten immer noch besser, noch wilder, noch energiegeladener als bei seinen Studioaufnahmen. Seine Konzerte in den 60ern gelten bei vielen als die besten. "Abnutzungserscheinungen" gab es damals noch nicht. Seine intensive Countryphase begann erst kurz nach dem Auftritt im Starclub, folglich ist fast ausschließlich Rock'n'Roll zu hören - und zwar von seiner wildesten, anarchichsten Art.Gleich beim Opener "Mean Woman Blues" zieht Jerry alle Register und zeigt, wo es lang geht: Harter, schneller, dynamischer Rock'n'Roll mit meist hammerharten Klaviersoli. Dazu singt, schreit, stöhnt und schnurrt er - letzteres mit seinem berühmten "Rrrrr". Es folgt sein Hit "High School Confidetial" den er so schnell bringt, dass es fast ein wenig überdreht wirkt. Vor "Money", einem Hit aus den frühen 60ern (Original von Barrett Strong), kommt die vielleicht längste Ansage des Albums. Diese dauert aber nur etwa 10 Sekunden. Überhaupt hält sich Jerry mit Ansagen zurück und spielt oft ohne Ansage Song auf Song, was dem Album zusätzliche Dynamik beschert. Nach dem eher ruhigen, bluesigem "Matchbox" kommt eine hervorragende, zweiteilige Version des Ray Charles-Klassikers "What'd I say". Danach steht das damals vor Rock'n'Rock wohl weitgehend "behütete" deutsche Publikum, für das derartige Auftritte neu gewesen sein muss, endgültig Kopf und "Jerry Jerry"-Rufe tönen durch den Star Club. Der Killer nutzt die Gunst und spielt seinen größten Hit "Great Balls of Fire", der von der Menge mitgesungen wird.Danach gibt es für Jerry kein Halten mehr. Ein Rock'n'Roll-Klassiker folgt dem anderen. Er spielt dabei auch einige Hits anderer Künstler, denen er aber eine eigene, sehr schnelle, wilde Note gibt. Diese Dynamik wird nur einmal durch das einzige wirklich ruhige Stück auf dem Album unterbrochen, dem Hank Williams-Song "Your Cheatin' heart". Dabei stellt Lewis unter Beweis, dass er auch in diesem Genre exzellent ist. Anschließend nimmt er das vorherige schnelle Tempo mit einer harten Version von "Hound Dog" sofort wieder auf. Das eigendliche Konzert endet mit einer sehr langen Version seines Hits "A whole lotta shakin' goin' on". Die beste Version dieses Songs, die ich kenne! Eine sehr harte Version von "Down the Line" wird dem tobenden Publikum als Zugabe serviert.Das Album ist nicht nur für Jerry Lee Lewis-Fans Pflich, sondern auch jedem wärmstens zu empfehlen, der Rock('n'Roll) der etwas härteren Gangart mag. Nach dem Hören wird klar, warum das Album damals nicht nur in Punkto Klang, sondern auch in Punkto künstlerische Darbietung neue Maßstäbe setzte. Völlig zurecht gilt es auch heute noch als eines der besten - für einige sogar DAS beste - Live-Album der Rockgeschichte. Es ist für wahr ein Meilenstein!
