A Great Read...
The old ladies with their southern dialect and sharp wisdom made me chuckle as I thought about all of the wise women I have encountered and the similar things they told me. I rated this book 5 Stars because the author weaves a story laced with pearls of wisdom, love, and human nature. With a touch of fictional history, mystery, and southern "magic", this book a great reference book for those who know what to do with it.Might want to re read this one as the story switches characters and scenes without warning; makes it kind of difficult to keep the story lines straight and whose who. So I will definitely re-read this novel again before my summer ends.May the ancestors be pleased with your life's work Gloria Naylor. Ase'!

One of my favorite books of all time!
"Mama Day" is a book I return to, over and over again. I never get tired of revisiting Willow Springs! Gloria Naylor evokes the heat of a Southern Summer like no other author I've read. Her characters are alive, glowing with life, and the story is engrossing. I have given many copies of this book to friends because I want them to enjoy the world created within its binding. Whenever I need to lose myself I pull this book from the shelf and I'm with Mama Day, Coco and Miranda Day beneath the waving palmettos in the fictional beauty of a barrier island. Do yourself a favor - try this book.

Beautiful Story
A journey not a book............filled with so many layers you have to savor it in bits. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I always do with Ms. Naylor's work. This was a tale of love, redemption, voohoo/hoodoo, and so much more. Ophelia leaves Willow Springs to go off to New York. There she finds George....a man unlike any others she has ever met.....who shows her the real New York.....and reveals her to herself in the process. But when she has to bring him to Willow Springs...a mythical town with even more mythical people in it......to meet Mama Day and the rest of the Days, she will find out if he can truly love her after what is revealed there. Seeing IS believing........or is it?

Black Girl Magic in literary form
I first read this book when I was in my early twenties and it blew my mind. As a granddaughter of Geechee folks, stories of magic and mysticism were always around me but never within context. This book brought back all of those old tales told by old women sitting on back porches shelling peas or cleaning fish. Now that I’ve read it again with a more in depth understanding of our folklore and history, I can appreciate that it’s a love story, a story of redemption and a bit of myth about the Great Mother.

Great story.
I loved the story once i finally got into it. It was slow to get into at first but i finally caught on. I also got confused when jumping from character to character because use I'd read several paragraphs before realizing what character was talking or thinking. Other than that, loved the characters , backgrounds and storylines.

Captivating
This is such a beautifully written story. The language brings the milieus and the people to life and lets the story unfold at a well-chosen pace. I loved reading it. It was magical.

I love Gloria Naylor's books from Women of Brewster Place
I love Gloria Naylor's books from Women of Brewster Place, my introduction to her. Linden Hills was full of suspense, Mama Day was the love story. I cried so much, felt so much while reading all three books. I don't read nearly as much as I should but I love her writing, couldn't put the books down til the end.

Thank you Gloria Naylor
I could hear the voices of the characters, soft, strong and vibrant. Highly enjoyed each page. The story with enough wonderment to be surprising and enough depth to be believable. I would have happily kept reading had the story continued.
