The Crow: Special Edition

Amazing
I watched the original The Crow movie and was curious to see how the comic compared. I have to say I am impressed. This comic book is fantastic. The illustrations are incredibly well detailed and the cover is well designed too. The story is a real page turner. James O'Barr does a great job at developing Eric's character and the journey he goes on for vengeance. Overall I think this is an perfect way to owner Brandon Lee and it is definately worth a read.

My valentine has hollow eyes
When I was fourteen years old I found an old discarded comic with a visually stunning cover in a friend of mine's garage. Swapping away some Marvel titles for the little group of four, I considered myself the winner of our deal. I'd never heard of Caliber Press, James O'Barr or the Crow but I was blown away by what I saw and in fact had never read anything like it. Not until years later would I hear of the death of Brandon Lee, which saddened me but also stunned me as I realised someone else had happened upon one of my oldest prize possessions and enjoyed them as much as I did.For anyone who only knows the Crow by it's admittedly badly dated movie, I recommend this graphic novel collection. What J. O'Barr achieved is an obvious labour of love, but varies so much from the movie as to almost be unrecognisable. The ultraviolence is vivid and gleeful, with hand drawn artwork that only gets better as the man improves over the years. Familiar lyrics from bands like Joy Division and The Cure litter the book as well. Those beautiful covers that first caught my eye are also reprinted here, along with some standalone artwork. I get just as much enjoyment from reading these today as I did all those years ago.

A seminal but perhaps overated work.
You will find 16 five star reviews of the original graphic novel on amazon uk; many gushing over the emotional impact of this work. They will all apply to this "special" edition equally so I won't discuss the story here. This edition has some new segments the author insists were always intended for the original publication but omitted for technical reasons, so represents the "fuller work" in an important sense. If you want to build a library of landmark graphic novels "The Crow" certainly belongs in it alongside Sandman and Watchmen; and this is a nice enough edition, well printed on glossy stock. A little pricey for a softcover but worth it I think. Dramatically, the book dosn't do that much for me - perhaps because I lack the requisite goth genes. I think this is one of the very few (the only??) case where the movie is better than the original comic. But I can appreciate the technique and pacing involved here. Unlike much in the graphic novel genre, this is indeed Art. The drawing is both strong and stylistically varied , but always comfortingly old school. To quote from the author's intro : "Everything in here is ink on paper. Even the lettering is hand done on the orginal art. The new pages were completed in the same manner, using twenty-year-old leftover supplies from the original book. Jack White once said 'Technology destroys art', and I agree; you're not learning your craft when a computer does it for you. I do have a computer by the way - its over there in the corner under those stacks of books and artwork, with Post-It notes stick on its dusty screen. A large cache of spiders is nesting in it, so its not a total loss." . This nicely sums up the nature of the appeal this book has for me.

Magnifique comics
