Teeth [DVD] [2008]

Although very distasteful, this now very hard to find (for obvious reasons) satire-horror is entertaining and at times funny. Worth a watch.

I like horror films to be smart, poignant or amusing, and Teeth is all three. For those just wanting to get off on human suffering it will vastly disappoint; horror newcomers may find the gore too much, but it's few and far between and aims more for gross out than sadism. This is the kind of fun gory movie that used to be made, before sick auteurs decided to punish, not entertain audiences. It enters John Waters territory with camp black humour - I loved a scene where Dawn cycles home to the sound of a corny old pop song - though its plot is more linear and realistic. One of Teeth's charms is that it's clearly an indie film; it has a unique and anarchic feel which a studio might have removed. Having grown weary of black comedies which wuss out (Keeping Mum, Dark Shadows) Teeth goes all the way, so to speak. It's intelligent and unpandering.Teenage Dawn O'Keefe (Jess Weixler) is part of abstinence group The Promise, and preaches to young students about not giving up their "gift". How she became "pure" isn't explained; her mum (Vivienne Benesch) and stepdad (Lenny Von Dohlen) seem fairly liberal. I'd bet she was swayed by good adverts and the need to belong, like so many teens. There's also a scumbag stepbrother (John Hensley) who's in love with her, though she's repulsed by him. Her urges, however, are awoken by Tobey (Hale Appleman), a fellow Promiser she starts chastely dating. When he attempts to break their vow, she discovers something literally inside her. She has the mythical vagina dentate: teeth in her genitals which attack when provoked.The first half of Teeth is the best. Before her "awakening" Dawn is shy and repressed, the kind of girl Jerry Falwell would have liked, though not hateful, just sweetly misguided. Toby focuses her inner urges, and there's a fantasy scene which is funny, touching and artful. The film settles in to more standard slasher fare halfway through; characters do stupid things so Dawn can attack then somehow escape. One scene with another high school boy is especially strange; after hearing what Dawn tells him his actions are bizarre, though it could be satire. Also, I'd forgive that scene anything just because it ends in a flawless gag. Even when it grows routine, Teeth still doesn't wuss out. Its climax is gross, funny and poetic. It's also kind of understated when you reflect that bigger films need deafening explosions. Teeth is cool indie fun, well worth a look for those who enjoy real horror.

a women learn that somethings wrong when her vagina is biting off penises,and finds in a book of muths that every so often one is born so she uses it on her stepbrother for revenge and when do it for a bet not know shes like this,men this will make you think twice,women get it and show what could happen,that will keep your married man in line hahaha,a great film.recommend it

I had NO idea that this was supposed to be a serious film, until I watched the extras!! I watched it as I would Shaun of the Dead or The Cottage as a pastche of the genre.It makes no sense even in psycho-sexual terms since, as we are told by the vague academic references about the vagina dentata, this condition is to be found in the Mother as a deterent to her Oedipal son not as some kind of high school revenge by a virgin intent on keeping her status til marriage.It did make me laugh especially the scene when the rottweiller gobbled his master's cut off genitalia.It goes for a Lynchian what-goes-on-behind-closed-doors scenario but comes off as a Carry On Celibacy versus Sodomy fiasco.Worth a watch if you are about 12 but then it might put you off sex for life ~ no bad thing, maybe

I didn't really know what I was expecting but this wasn't it. To start off with the film was about an hour long and had so many areas of the plot left unexplained, which is something I always find disappointing. Then there's the story line itself, it's a mix between incest and other vile things. I was expecting something not nice when I bought this, but this isn't what I was expecting. There was several good parts and the story line had so much potential but the acting ruined the whole thing, creating an awkward atmosphere that destroyed any good the film had.

The film it self is awful! Very boring and rubbish. The seller was very nice as when I received it the disc kept jumping so they sent another out. If I knew how rubbish it was going to be I wouldn't of bothered contacting the seller saying it didn't work. I wouldn't even give this film 1 star

Teeth is a very strange film indeed, but a masterpiece none the less. Jess weixler the lead actress is excellent and gives a very believable performance, the film has some very painfull bloody scenes of male genital severance. The story starts out about an innocent virgin girl, who in the end embraces her special gift.
