Over all I thought this was an amazing book for step by step formal training to learn C++. I used this during an accelerated course and maintained an A the whole time. It has good chapter reviews and subsection questions that help drive the process along the way. If using this for a course I highly suggest completeling every chapter review and ever the programs that are simple and easy because it will make you that much more familiar with coding environment you are using.

Awesome book
The reason I'm giving it four stars instead of 5 is because it test you but it doesn't give you answers to see if you are right.

The content is very clear and shall be considered as a great tool for beginners
Since Amazon has attempted to charge me for rental book damage that has already been done when the book first arrived, I am writing this review as a proof in case that this type of situation happens again.The attached photos show the condition of the book right after the package is opened. The book has obviously been damaged by water before, not severely but the damage is there. Considering what Amazon has done before, it might attempt to charge me for this.Despite this, the book itself is very well written, which is why the 3-star is given. The content is very clear and shall be considered as a great tool for beginners.

It's programming..!
Personally I enjoy programming.I feel as if this book is very helpful in not only getting someone started with the basics but also continuing onto more challenging things.The book is pretty thick which can be intimidating but if you enjoy programming and C++ shouldn't be a problem.

Horrible layout and verbose text do not a good book make
(Disclaimer: I am a first time coding student, and I have a degree in Philosophy; as such, the following are true: I have little knowledge of coding; I have a formal logic background, and I'm used to reading dense, poorly-worded books. Also, the $30 rental price tag is great. )Had to pick this book up for my intro c++ course, and I found it to be a pretty miserable read. The layout is poorly designed (and aesthetically unappealing), with overly-complex program code strung across multiple pages and with examples referencing diagrams 3-4 pages prior to the current page one is reading (prepare to stop reading to flip-back and forth almost constantly). This isn't conducive to learning, making the reading a slog to get through.The author is clearly an academic who needs a good editor: he doesn't write in any clear, straightforward manner, instead writing in a verbose (o?)stream-of-consciousness style that meanders from the points of the current sub-section w/o providing useful, concrete examples. This makes the book tedious to learn from ( as the already cerebral subject matter is rendered needlessly complex ). This, coupled w/ the poor layout, limits the book's use as a reference aid, as finding an answer to what one is looking for is always a hunt amongst extraneous sentences. You'll end up just Googling for your answers instead.Listen, I've suffered through reading Heidegger; I know painfully bad writing.If you're an instructor, please choose another book for your impressionable wannabe code-monkeys to cut their teeth on (especially if you have ESL/EFL students).

Excellent book. Great guide
We used this book as a study guide for a course I am doing at Santa Monica College. Excellent book. Great guide, that helps explain and learn a difficult subject.

Excellent C++ book.
Excellent introductory book and resource for learning C++. This book takes the reader through a large number of working code examples and explains concepts in an understandable way.The first 50-100 pages of this book consist of basic C++ ideas that you will encounter in any C++ course. After this, the book becomes more involved and so I recommend to the reader that after reading each section they should try all the code examples.What makes this book stand above the rest is how it assumes no prior knowledge of C++. It should take around 6-8 weeks to cover all the material in this book.
