Wrestling's Greatest Factions
This three disc DVD is a match compilation that highlights some of the greatest factions in wrestling history. It's set out with a highlight package that introduces us to a faction and then a match that showcases that faction.Corporate Rumble - This first match, from Monday Night RAW, is here to show off D-Generation X. It's a mini Royal Rumble featuring the members of the Corporation and DX to determine the #30 entrant into the official Royal Rumble. It was an entertaining match. The action wasn't anything special but it was fast paced and chaotic and there was always something going on. It had that 'anything can happen' feel that so many Attitude Era style matches had and had a good amount of time. It was a fun match to kick off the DVD.Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan, King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd vs. Big Machine, Super Machine and Captain Lou Albano - This match from The Big Event showcases the Heenan Family. The match was nothing special really. None of the action really stood out as anything other than some big guys clubbing at each other. It wasn't completely bad but it wasn't good either. There was nothing about it that I'm really going to remember afterwards. It also had a unsatisfying finish that made it all feel more pointless. It wasn't too good.Right to Censor vs. Too Cool - From Summerslam, this match highlights Right to Censor. It was a good back and forth tag match with a fast pace and entertaining action. The crowd were really into it which made it feel more exciting and it lasted just the right amount of time for what it was. There were some good reversals and it built to a strong and decisive finish. Not one of the more memorable factions for me but certainly an entertaining match. The Fabulous Freebirds and Jimmy Garvin vs. David, Kerry and Kevin Von Erich and Iceman King Parsons - This match comes from World Class Championship Wrestling and highlights the Freebirds. It was an elimination tornado match. It was a decent match. It was hard to follow at times with all the wrestlers in the ring at once but it wasn't too bad. It had a chaotic feel so the action was never boring. It does feature a couple of 'Iron Claws' towards the end which I always feel brings a match's quality down a bit unfortunately. Some of the eliminations are better than others but none of them are too bad. The overall finish I think could have been better but it was OK. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The Nexus vs. John Cena, Edge, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and Sheamus - This match from RAW highlights The Nexus and was an Elimination match. I wasn't a fan of this match early on as my two favourites got themselves deliberately eliminated very early on. It made sense though to give the inferior team of Nexus more of a chance to make it competitive. The match itself was still entertaining. It wasn't as good as their Summerslam main event but I wasn't bored watching it. It wasn't a very long match but it wasn't too short either. I won't remember much of the action from the match but I enjoyed it while it was going on.'Stunning' Steve Austin and 'Beautiful' Bobby Eaton vs. Sting and Marcus Bagwell - In this WCW match the Dangerous Alliance are showcased, represented by Austin and Eaton. This match started off looking good. It wan't the most fast paced action but it felt like it was building well with some good action and teamwork, especially from Austin and Eaton. It went for a good amount of time but then it didn't get a proper finish and that was disappointing. If they went a few more minutes and had a strong and decisive finish it would have been much better. It had some enjoyable action in there though so wasn't a complete waste.Bret 'Hitman' Hart, Owen Hart and 'British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith vs. 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, Dude Love and The Undertaker - This was a Flag match from an episode of RAW to show off The Hart Foundation. The winner had to capture their flag from a pole but they also had to tag in and out. It was a very good back and forth tag team match. The action was strong the whole way through and it had a decent amount of time. The flag aspect of the match felt unnecessary as most of the action was just like a regular tag team match and all it did was make the finish feel a little anti-climactic. It was still a very enjoyable match overall though.Team WCW(Diamond Dallas Page,"Rowdy" Roddy Piper and The Warrior) vs. Team nWo Hollywood(Hollywood Hogan, Bret Hart and Stevie Ray) vs. Team nWo Wolfpac(Kevin Nash, Sting and Lex Luger) - This was a War Games match, from Fall Brawl, featuring three teams to highlight the nWo. To me the match looks like a good example of how diluted the nWo story had become. Stevie Ray felt like an odd choice to be here, Sting was a part of the nWo, Warrior was representing WCW despite only being there for about three matches and Roddy Piper was part of WCW's front line in 1998. From an outsider's perspective it wasn't looking good before the match started. Also it was apparently every man for himself even though they were split into teams. The action was alright and like all War Games matches it was fun. Everything after Warrior entered was a bit stupid and took away from the match but other than that, while not exactly a good match, it was fun. Also the rules were different for this one as it was won by pinfall not submission. The Brood vs. The J.O.B Squad - This match highlighting The Brood comes from Rock Bottom. It was a much more competitive match than I was expecting. I was expecting a squash match but this was a very competitive, back and forth match. It had a fast pace for the most part and the action was constantly entertaining. Edge and Christian would get so much better than they were here but this was still a very enjoyable match with a good, decisive finish.Million Dollar Team(Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigelow, King Kong Bundy and The Heavenly Bodies) vs. Guts and Glory(Lex Luger, Adam Bomb, Mabel and The Smoking Gunns) - This was a traditional Survivor Series Elimination match to show off the Million Dollar Corporation. It was an entertaining match, the action in the ring was nothing special really but something about these traditional Survivor Series matches just makes them a lot of fun to watch. There were some strong eliminations and some good reversals and near-falls. It lasted a good amount of time and stayed entertaining throughout with a strong and decisive finish.Owen Hart, Kama Mustafa and D'Lo Brown vs. Triple H and the New Age Outlaws - This match showcases the Nation of Domination and comes from Over The Edge. It was a very good, competitive tag match. It got a good amount of time and the action was always entertaining. There were good reversals, some decent near-falls and they built to a strong and decisive finish. Everyone in the match worked hard and it was a very enjoyable and entertaining match.Big Stevie Cool vs. Axl Rotton - This match from ECW is here to show Stevie's role in the Blue World Order, with the other members at ringside. I didn't think the match was very good, there was nothing exciting about the action. There were some good near-falls as they got closer to the end but that was about it. Some of the footage comes from ECW 'fan-cam' but it wasn't much different from ECW's regular camera shots. The match had a good, decisive finish which was good but wasn't much until that point and didn't really show off the BWO.'Stone Cold' Steve Austin vs. The Corporation - This was a Gauntlet match to highlight the Corporation. It's a strange gauntlet as Austin apparently only had to beat one man to win. That led to a string of disqualifications to get passed that. Ignoring that though it's an enjoyable match due to the chaotic 'anything can happen' atmosphere the match had. The action was nothing special but they managed to make it exciting and entertaining anyway. It turned into more of an angle than a match by the end but that didn't stop it from being good anyway and it led to one of the more memorable moments of the Austin/McMahon rivalry.Evolution(Triple H, Randy Orton and Ric Flair) vs. D'Von, Bubba Ray and Spike Dudley - This Tag Team Elimination match highlights Evolution. It was a very good, competitive match. It had a good pace with plenty of reversals and some good near-falls. The teamwork from Evolution was great and all the eliminations were strong. It was entertaining throughout and pretty chaotic, it lasted a good amount of time and had a strong and decisive finish. A really enjoyable match.Kurragan and Golga vs. Too Much - This comes from Shotgun Saturday Night and shows off The Oddities, which feels like a strange choice for this DVD. Too Much would be better known later on as Too Cool. The match wasn't very good. The Oddities suck in the ring so there wasn't much to it. There were a couple of entertaining matches but it wasn't a good match. It was short though so still easy to watch.Shane Douglas and Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Rob Van Dam and Sabu - Coming from ECW's Cyberslam, this match highlights the team of Triple Threat. This one started off OK when Sabu and RVD were working over Douglas. Thankfully the action picked up once Bam Bam tagged in as things got more competitive with more reversals and more exciting action. Things got more chaotic as the match went on, which was a good thing here. There were some good near-falls as they got closer to the end of the match and it built to a good, strong finish. I liked this more than I expected to. Turn your volume down for this one though so Bill Alfonzo's whistle doesn't give you a headache.Legacy vs. Triple H, Batista and Shane McMahon - This comes from Backlash and highlights Legacy. Despite being a Six Person Tag Team match, Triple H's WWE Championship was on the line. It was a great match that showed off some really strong teamwork by Legacy. Orton was taken out early on leaving them with a disadvantage for a while but once he returned it became a much more competitive match. The action broke down into exciting chaos towards the end had a very convincing near-fall and a strong, decisive finish. All the action was enjoyable and it ended up being a really good match. The Hulkamaniacs(Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Lex Luger and Sting) vs. The Dungeon of Doom(Kamala the Ugandan Giant, The Zodiac, Meng and The Shark) - The Dungeon of Doom were being highlighted here in a War Games match. While you already kind of know going in to this one who's going to get the win, it's still a surprisingly enjoyable match. It's still a back and forth brawl and the action is entertaining. The War Games chaotic atmosphere makes an entertaining match where any singles matches between any members of these teams really wouldn't be. The star power on the babyface team makes this feel more important than it probably was and that helps the match a lot. I wasn't expecting much going in but it ended up being pretty fun.Big Show vs. CM Punk, Luke Gallows and Joseph Mercury - This was from Summerslam 2010. I hated this match when it happened. It did CM Punk no favours because if he lost it wouldn't look good and if he won then who cares? he had two other people on his side. As a match it had some entertaining action. CM Punk did his best to make this entertaining and Big Show looked pretty dominant. It wasn't a bad match at all it just wasn't a good use for CM Punk at the time. It had an alright finish and overall it was entertaining enough if you just sit back and watch it for what it is. Not the best match to show off the Straight Edge Society though.Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard vs. Barry Windham, Lex Luger and Sting - The DVD closes with this match highlighting the original stable, The Four Horsemen. This is the kind of match you expect from the Horsemen. Their teamwork is great and it's very enjoyable watching them isolate and work over an opponent. The action is constantly good and the crowd were really into it. There were some good near-falls as the match went on and they had a good, decisive finish. A very good way to close out the DVD.This was a pretty good DVD. It shows off a load of different factions from all kinds of eras and multiple promotions. There were plenty of enjoyable and entertaining matches included and while a few matches were nothing special it was all easy to watch and the DVD moved along at a good pace. I would have liked to have had different matches for the two War-Games matches as they're already on a DVD of there own and are some of the longer matches on the DVD so take up a lot of room. I also would have changed a couple of matches with lacklustre finished but overall there's more good than bad on this DVD so I'd still recommend it.
