I just want to reiterate what other 4-5 star reviews have stated. This is a JAPANESE incense plate for Japanese style incense. I have had mine for over 3 years now and love it. Please look at the incense in the display photo. Does your incense look like this? All the incense I burn using this incense plate is between 2.75" and 6" long and without the bamboo stick. I also burn long Nag Champa sticks but I use a simple wooden incense holder to burn those. Like others have said, I like the idea that the small square plate is not glued to the larger plate. I've had other incense holders that after each use, would have to hold it over the trash upside down and bang on the bottom until I could finally get the little remaining incense stub to fall out. With this one I just pick up the small square plate push the top of the remaining incense stub with my finger and it falls out the bottom! Then I just have to set it down and start burning another. This incense plate is perfect for burning short non bamboo stick style incense.

Thrilled
Wasn't very much convinced about it when i purchase it, but when it arrives and i saw the quality of the product and the functionality I was thrilled, I purchase two in different colors. The trick is to use it with the incense stick that fits into it: I purchase "Morning Star Incense" for that purpose and so far its doing fine, also a great piece of decor. I would recommended to any one that loves aroma-therapy. I'll do the job more than fine! I will buy two more to complete all the rooms in the house.

Perfect for what it's intended for.
This is a JAPANESE incense plate for Japanese style incense. It's a shorter extruded type of incense with no stick. It doesn't work for your bigger incense because it's not made for your bigger incense. As a Japanese incense tray, this one looks nice, is sturdy with a nice glaze on top, and does what it's supposed to--mainly serving as a receptacle for Japanese style incense. I bought the Morning Star 12 Fragrance Variety from Nippon with this and am very happy with the quality of this product (and especially with how much better Japanese incense is than the more synthetic smelling Indian incense varieties).

Stylish and functional
Make sure that you have the right kind of incense for this. You need the kind with no wooden core, like Morning Star. It's just a short stick, kind of like a thin cigar of incense. Try the Amber scent - it's brilliant. Looks great, easy to clean.

ok TWO PIECE small tray.
Nothing to say that hasn't been said; the holder is not attached but a bit of hot glue or even sticky tak will anchor it if you use standard incense sticks. Also be wary of the angle of insertion of the incense if you don't want ash on your table; the tray part is pretty small. This is very simple and attractive, but the two-part aspect is an unpleasant surprise.

image size is roughly actual size.
very dissappointed with this item. as stated prior the small square placement for the stick is not actually attached and is too small for anything but small incense. and the plate is so small that I even doubt I could use it to catch the ashes for the larger sticks that I bought as a package deal that Amazon promoted.

Ehhh..
The product is great, but the picture makes it look kind of purple and it's brown. Also, It's not long enough to catch all the ashes from the stick, so you have to cut the bottom off.

Lovely Incense Plate
This is a very pleasing Japanese incense plate, but reading the other reviews, it appears people have attempted to use non-Japanese style incense sticks in it. This is designed specifically for joss-sticks. Joss-sticks have no wooden core, they're pure incense which means they're more delicate and they're smaller; perfectly sized for a plate like this. The reason for the small square with the hole in it is because a joss-stick will burn almost completely down to the end. The small ceramic square lets you lift it up and poke the tiny remainder out of the way, before inserting a new joss-stick. If you use joss-sticks in any other sort of incense holder, you'll have trouble getting that remainder out.In short, this product will work perfectly as it's intended, just use the correct incense :)
