Halva, or halvah [HAHL-vah, hahl-VAH] is a traditional confection, dating back to the Byzantine era, when it was a popular and highly regarded part of people's everyday diet. Later it became introduced to the Mediterranean and Middle East, where it immediately gained popularity as a versatile, quality dessert. Today, Macedonian Halva, produced by Haitoglou Bros. is available in most international supermarkets and delicatessens worldwide in wrapped bars and cans, and in large slabs from which individual slices can be cut.
