Mission: Impossible 3 4K UHD + Blu-ray Steelbook

"M:I-3" is the one film of the trilogy that almost never happened - delayed and cancelled so many times we thought it would never come. Ironic, then, that it is far and away the best film of the three. Where the original was a little bereft of big action sequences and the second blatantly self - indulgent in slow-mo shots of The Cruiser's floppy hair, the third strikes the perfect balance between top-drawer action, fantastic acting and an enthralling story-line. Largely due to J.J. Abrams' masterful directing, this film has blistering pace whilst taking the time to give us some truly memorable character acting. The support cast for the film is superb: despite limited screen time, Michelle Monaghan portrays a believably strong but vulnerable other half to Cruise's secret agent. And Ving Rhames' Luther Stickle is also a likeable and interesting performance. Most memorable however is Philip Seymour Hoffman as bad guy Owen Davien. He is a very, very bad man, always one step ahead of things, and the opening scene sets him up as a truly enthralling villain. But this film is all about one person: Tom Cruise. Looking at him move, run , fight, just be on the screen, it's hard to believe its ten years since the first "Impossible". He takes his character to new heights in this third outing, enhancing Hunt's humanity and showing us what really drives the man, what "pushes his buttons". This is helped by the on-screen chemistry with Monaghan, but also with Seymour Hoffman. He steals every scene with one quick knowing grin at the screen, and not just in the action sequences (almost all of which he performed himself); particularly memorable is an emotional sequence between Hunt and his wife-to-be, when The Cruiser takes up over 10 seconds of screen time in total silence, yet making it one of the most captivating scenes in the film. In simple terms, this "Mission" successfully completes the sometimes impossible task of a balanced action movie - a perfect blend of non stop, breath taking stunts with top notch acting. Whilst watching MI:2 i found so many continuity issues, and what with his stupid hair, rock themed music, Anthony Hopkins (oddly cast in a cameo) not being a permenant fixture (what happened to the dude in MI:1??) i just felt it was over the top cheese and failed at entertaining. So you can expect how tightly my fingers were crossed for the 3rd outing which i had hoped for a success. This doesnt fail on any case, it overtakes MI:2 on every level returning back to the MI:1 formula, whilst also casting the brilliant Philip Seymour Hoffman as the bad guy. Sure its cheese, as was the other two, but definately entertaining! A cracking buy and if you liked the first then you wont be disappointed.

I am totally convinced that Mission Impossible is equal to or better than James Bond. I always thought Tom Cruise would have been a great 007.

Mission: Impossible III is the third film based on the spy-themed television series Mission: Impossible. It's directed by J. J. Abrams and stars Tom Cruise (reprising his role of IMF agent Ethan Hunt), Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames, Michelle Monaghan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Billy Crudup, Laurence Fishburne, Maggie Q & Simon Pegg. Location filming was spread across China (Shanghai and Xitang), Germany (Berlin), Italy (Rome and Caserta), the United States (California and Virginia), and Vatican City. Ethan Hunt has retired from active duty and is enjoying contented bliss with his future wife Julia (Monaghan). However, he is called back into action to help rescue one of his former IMF pupils from the bad guys. This brings Hunt into a conflict with evil arms dealer Owen Davian (Hoffman) and sets the wheels in motion for a good versus bad battle that could spell disaster for anyone close to Ethan. If you believed the Tom Cruise haters then you would think that he needed a hit so badly he trundled out a second sequel to the popular Mission Impossible series. However, since this came a year after the gargantuan success of War of the Worlds, and two years after garnering praise for his turn in Michael Mann's Collateral, it's clear this is more than just a cash in job. Cruise cares about the franchise, and tho no quotes suggest it, he possibly felt that Mission Impossible 2 was tepid and not befitting the entertaining core he wants for the series. So enter J. J. Abrams, who slipped into the director's chair vacated by David Fincher (off to work on Zodiac) and Joe Carnahan (upset about the tone of the story). It was an inspired choice by Cruise, for Abrams, already a TV darling after Lost & Alias, wanted to personalise Hunt whilst returning to the techno trickery of Bruce Webber's original TV series. And he got it. What he also got was Cruise on mega action star wattage form and an end product to sit with the best action film's of the year. It also became easily the best film of the trilogy after the convoluted first film and John Woo's safe, but uninspired, sequel. It's silly of course, very much so, but it's the kind of whizz bang silliness that often sinks lesser action movies. It's true to say as well that the personalisation of Hunt, IE: the dreaded romance angle, is nothing less than standard by the numbers fluff. The writing in truth could have done with spending more time with the splendidly vile Hoffman than with the Cruise & Monaghan (engaging and fine enough) axis. While the support cast all fade weakly into Cruise's shadow as he totally dominates from start to finish. But this is about bang for your buck nonsense, where excellently constructed action sequences flow thick and fast and the gadgets (brain bombs are just brilliant) are never in short supply. And so we come back to the Cruise haters, who, I can guarantee will hate this with their every breath. Because this is Cruise: The Movie, perhaps the ultimate superstar vehicle of the last decade? But whisper it to them quietly, he's pretty darn good at the action stuff, and Abrams knows this too, and directs accordingly. A third sequel will arrive in 2011, as an action movie fan I'll be first in the queue. 8/10

Great film happy dayz

Mission Impossible 3 sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt to retrieve a very dangerous device called the Rabbits Foot for bad guy arms dealer Owen Davian (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), who's holding Ethan's wife hostage as a way to blackmail Ethan into stealing the aforementioned device. The Rabbits foot is really just a Macguffin. What matters here is that Ethan Hunt and his team must risk life and limb to steal the device in order to save Ethan's wife. There's a much bigger focus on the team collaboration in MI3 than the previous films and it makes a huge difference. The action in this movie is just about the most thrilling i've ever seen. That's really all you need to know to be honest. The entire cast puts in a great performance. Lawrence Fishburn is a great addition to the cast as Ethan's hardline boss. The locations are interesting. It's funny at the right moments and it has a good ending. My only complaint (it's more of an observation though) is that the dramatic scenes are a bit overdone for my taste. I think this is perhaps because the chemistry between Michelle Monaghan and Tom Cruise provide little spark. I think the film would have benefitied greatly if Thandie Newton had reprised her role from MI2. MI3 is a five star action movie though. If you're a fan of this genre this is a must buy.
