Home Dimmer Module

Works great, cheaper than Leviton dimmers
I got this out of desperation after my Schlage lock didn’t pair with my Wink hub. As a repeater, I figured it should strengthen the signal between the hub and the lock, enabling all the Wink functionality. Unfortunately, or rather very fortunately, I’ve not had a chance to check the repeater function because the Wink hub and lock started working well after a couple of hours (It’s important to have the hub just a few feet from the lock during the initial pairing. After that, you can move the hub away.)As a lamp dimmer, this works well, and at $20 is about half the price of a Leviton. One irksome issue was that the instructions gave no information on how to put the dimmer into pairing mode. Here’s how I got it paired with Wink:- Put the Wink hub into the “include” mode- Push the dimmer’s button 2 times- Wait for the Wink hub light to turn blue againThe dimmer paired as a generic light bulb.

Fine as repeater and for two prong plugs
Bought this as a repeater rather than a dimmer module. But plugged it into a garage light just because it was out there. Connected easily to my SmartThings hub, and has worked fine as a repeater so I can reliably control my outdoor pool equipment. There was one unexpected issue, and hence the knock in the star, is that all the pictures show a three pronged plug. As I determined (and the accompanying instructions confirm), the three prong plug is pass through only. There is another two prong plug that is controlled. So if you have a three prong device you need to plug in (like I did), either ground per code, or move on. Perhaps they sent me the wrong model? If not, the advertising seems misleading. If you have a two prong device, this issue will not matter to you.

Good Z-Wave Dimming module for the price
First off, prospective buyers of this module should be aware that the Schlage RP200RNX V N N SL Z-Wave Dimmer Modules are actually new old stock, and branded "Verizon", apparently left over from when Verizon was in the Security/Home Control Business, with Schlage stickers covering the original Verizon SKU sticker. The module also appears to be identical to the Linear PD300Z-2, which I have a few of, and it sells for about 20 bucks compared to over $30 for the Linears. The module itself works fine, and I'm using it to control a LED lamp, even though it's specified for incandescent use only. The lamp can be controlled from completely off to full brightness, with no issues. I've tried it with a couple of different LED lamps with the same result.I just ordered 4 more, because it's hard to beat the price for Z-Wave dimming.

Best value in a 2-prong Z-Wave outlet
I'm using this with a Mi Casa Verde VeraLite Home Controller, White and Green and it works perfectly. I have one for a standard lamp, but I also used this along with a 24VAC wall-wart to control our yard sprinkler system - it can be the creative basis for a lot of home automation fun. I'd give it 5 stars except that the controlled outlet is 2 prong; the 3 prong outlet you see in the photo is just a pass-through. My guess is that they designed it as 2 prong to keep you from overloading it with an appliance - the thinking that 2 prong will tend to force it to be used for lamps only, but of course that is easy to work around. Or, they just want you to pay more for the 3 prong version. In any event, it cost them a star, even if the price is the best I've seen anywhere.

Cheap and excellent.
Works great with SmartThings. Wasn't difficult to pair, just have to double press the button on the unit a few times and it finds it. It has a very nice dimmer range, and fades on and off the light by default. It makes no noise, and has a 3 prong pass through outlet. The dimmed outlet is two prong, and it requires a 3 prong grounded outlet. It is a little bigger than I thought it would be but it works well and its price and can't be beat at only 20 dollars. It also seems to be a great ZWave repeater.UPDATE 9/5/17: lowered to three stars as it has started to become somewhat unresponsive after a couple years of use. I have to hit the button on the unit a couple times to get it to connect with smart things again.

Dead after a few years
Dead after a couple years. Worked great for the first few. Now it doesn’t work with SmartThings. I tried unpairing and re-pairing. Doesn’t work. Save your money. Don’t buy Schlage.

Previously used? Old model/version with less functionality?
For the most part, this works as it should, but the module appears to have been a used product. It came packed in simply a plastic bag and with no instruction manual. There are visible scuffs and discolorations on the module and the finish feels tacky/rubbery when it should feel smooth and slick as plastic should feel. After a couple of weeks using the module I have found that it does seem to lose communication from time to time, unlike my other z-wave devices that are located very near to this module (so I question the reliability of this module as opposed to the network). Also, I have another Schlage dimmer module that I received in a Nexia "starter pack." With that dimmer module, I can have it turned off, yet still turn a lamp on/off by using the actual pull chain on the lamp. With the dimmer module that I received (being reviewed), I do not have that control on the lamp, but am limited to turning the lamp on/off by pressing the button on the module or using the app / Web interface. Especially for guests, I find having control at the lamp is a necessity. Maybe the module I received is an older version that lacks the functionality that the one in the "starter pack" has. But nonetheless, it is disappointing.

Falling down
After my initial purchase, this device worked correctly for a few weeks. Since that time, it's been troubleshooting effort after troubleshooting effort. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It rarely holds to schedule and for some reason, I have to unplug, then replug at least once a week to get this thing going. I don't know if it was hit by lightening or if it is just a piece of crap. I've taken it out of service and will try to find a way to troubleshoot z-wave devices...desperately need a zwave sniffer.
