Sleuth [DVD]

UNBELIEVABLY DREADFUL.
Bloody awful. The Laurence Olivier/Michael Caine original had charm and wit, and was extremely well written by Anthony Shaffer. This - parody? - was one of the dreariest, vulgar and totally meaningless pieces of cinema that it has ever been my misfortune to experience. Give it a miss and watch the original version instead.

Bit too smug with the technology
It’s years since I watched the original with a young Michael Caine who now plays the Laurence Olivier part. Very stylised set and lots of technology at work. But I just found it cold and struggled to stay interested. Admittedly knowing the twist of old won’t have helped but I’m always happy to play along - this version seemed to be too pleased with remote controls and left the characters less engaging.

sleuth a detective story with a difference.
A cleverly constructed crime caper with Michael Caine and Jude Law as the lead protagonasts.Love the way the plot twists and revolves round the two lead characters leading to the final sting in the tail.Recommended viewing and a clever variation of the original which starred Laurence olivier.Recommended viewing!

Not as good as the original
Hoped this remake would’ve been as entertaining & clever as the original with Olivier & Caine. Unfortunately it wasn’t. Caine gave an okay performance but he’s no thespian & Law was really a bit support actor here. One urs sign of how this lacked the sophistication of the original was its dependency on the hi tech gizmos in the house.

Disappointing remake, great acting
Superb acting in this battle of wits, one might see it as a film of 3 acts. The first 2 acts are spot on and well paced and moody; they stay close to the original story too though there are no flashes of the whimsy or light heartedness the original provided. The final act however deviates from the original story and tries to change what it's about, rather unsuccessfully in my opinion. If you like taught thrillers then this is worth a look, but if you're a big fan of the original with Olivier and Caine then you may be disappointed as was I.

Sleuth NOT the ORIGINAL !!!!!!
I want to be clear right from the start . I ONLY bought this DVD out of respect for Sir Michael Caine . I wanted to be able to compare it to the original at any given time , but believe me when I say that it does not even come close to the original's wit, ingenuity and stellar perfomances by both lead actors (Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine). Great dialogues and great monologues are no longer part of this mediocre remake .I only gave it three stars for Sir Michael Caine . If anyone is interested in watching Sleuth my advice to you would be to buy THE ORIGINAL , believe me you will enjoy it immensely , especially if you like Olivier and Caine as actors .
