better how-to's, better use of scraps
Learned how to improve the cutting boards I was making. More unique approaches, better how-to's, better use of scraps.Tools needed to make better cutting boards: table saw, band saw, planer, glue applicators, your own sanding dust for joint fillers, your own imagination.

Step by step guidance
This is a book of layered puzzles, bandsawn boxes and desk clock projects, all introduced to illustrate a variety of uses for patterned laminations of scrap wood. Syfert introduces the tools necessary, a bandsaw being his major power tool, and outlines basic procedures and types of wood to use, then goes into detail on the cutting and glue-up procedures to produce many different patterns. Using contrasting woods such as white oak and walnut, the author alters the strips, waits for the glue up, and then crosscuts them at an angle. From these initial cuts, he assembles herringbone patterns, chevrons and herringbone checkerboards. Inverting pieces to make chevrons, he then layers in a solid strip of padauk to add a red color to the mix. Recutting at an angle and rearranging the strips yields feathery designs in multiple colors. After all this, he bandsaws the width of the whole assembled block to create beautiful veneers 1/8" to 3/4" thick for box tops or to insert into other materials. The projects are for practice. The methods can be used for any workpiece you want to add a patterned effect to. Several puzzles are shown step by step, from a simple cube with only two bandsaw cuts, to wavy, four-layered, boxed puzzles I'd hate to have to put together. One is a ten piece table and chair puzzle cut from a laminated block only 3"x3"x6", which Syfert says was very popular in the 1930s. There are also cutting boards, a lazy susan and a basket-weave design to learn. Syfert has presented lots of possiblities to add geometric patterns and color to your work. Let your imagination run wild.Barb Siddiqui, Book Review Editor, [...]

At last, a book for the hobbyiest and professional
I found this book a real pleasure. Most woodworking books are written for the novice woodworker or the highly experienced. This book provides both simple and harder projects for the woodworker at both ends of the spectrum. The step by step pictures and explainations are such that a I had no problems in completing most of the projects. I have been selling these items with great success at the better Arts & Crafts shows as the items are truly unique and beautiful.

The book deals mainly with herringbone and checkerboard designs. I think the author could give more ideas and procedures on other types of designs.
