Walking the Bass
I play bass and wanted a guide as to how to make up walking bass lines. This book is about making the bass player a jazz bassist. The book makes no assumptions about the starting level and begins at the start. It then progresses via stages to introduce more and more complex walking bass lines. This is really helpful as it shows how to "build the walk" from very basic (if you pardon the pun) to the most complex walks.I should point out that this guide is primarily aimed at jazz style bass lines (which includes the blues, etc.) but these walking lines are adaptable to other genres. Ther are also a few very useful hints about playing, etc.A useful aid is the CD which comes with the book. You can use it to hear the bass lines. I read music but the primary idea is to get the bassist to be able to build a line from the chords alone. So there are exercises to develop this.Overall, if you want to get a good introduction to walking bass, this is a good guide. In particular, I did appreciate the step-by-step approach used by the author. It will not, of course, help you develop other styles directly, but will widen your bass horizons from simply playing the root note (base of the chord) repeatedly.

Fantastic book
As someone very new to walking basslines with somewhat limited music theory this book has helped tremendously. It provides clear explanations and great oppurtunities to practise what the book is teaching. I recommend taking your time with this - go through it thoroughly and do not rush! No one learned to walk in a day.

Helpful !
Good book and very helpful in giving explanations about construction and some music theory . I also like how Ed gives you the lesson linked to online audio - and then tells you to make up your own lines.

Highly recommended!
This is a very good start for those who want to improvise jazz, but also blues, rock, pop, and most other styles. The examples and tunes are in swingy jazz style, but the approch is universal.

THE standard for learning walking bass lines
This is by far the most helpful bass book I've ever had. It walks you through the foundations of a walking bass line from very basic root notes through all the possible approaches and variations. You could spend weeks on each page of this book and continue benefitting from it each day. This is a thin book that's rich with material. There's so much depth, and it's communicated simply and directly without any unnecessary sentences or diagrams. Every ounce of this book is dripping with value.Don't worry if you can't read standard notation. It starts off extremely simple. There are chord symbols and patterns described so you'll be able to figure out what notes to hit. Besides, it's not about playing exactly what the examples show on your first attempt (which tabs would allow you to do), it's about building up skills and techniques that you can apply yourself in improvising walking bass lines. Think of it as a benefit - you're guaranteed to come away from this book knowing a little more about how to read sheet music.Overall, I highly recommend this book, whether you're trying to learn walking bass for jazz or just trying to expand your capabilities on bass.

Good learning book
It is a good book for learning walking bass from the start but it is not for bass beginners you need to have notions of notation and know the fretboard to work with it

A must own for bassists and guitarists tired of vague learning material.
This is a fantastic instructional method book, which is unusual for anything Half Leonard puts out - in my experience; the author, Ed Friedland, is exceptionally clear in his communication to the reader, always explaining any topic/term he introduces (a make/break quality that MANY "degree holding experts" fail to execute in their material). This book is essential to guitar players, too, not just bassists, due to it's foundational understanding on core musical facets.Definitely a purchase you'll find beneficial.
