A breakthrough book in conscious parenting, from the New York Times bestselling author of The Conscious Parent Are you tired of yelling, punishing, or using timeouts--only to watch your child repeat the same behavior? In Out of Control , clinical psychologist and parenting expert Dr. Shefali Tsabary offers a radically different approach that goes far beyond traditional discipline. Grounded in the principles of conscious parenting, this powerful book invites parents to break free from outdated models of control and shift toward a parenting without punishment framework. Dr. Shefali reveals how attempts to "correct" or "discipline" children often ignore the real issue: our own emotional triggers and unmet expectations. In this transformative guide, you'll learn how to: Use positive discipline parenting strategies based on empathy and respect Build deeper connections through mindful parenting practices Raise emotionally healthy children who are self-aware and confident Empower your child through emotional intelligence instead of fear Let go of control and create a home rooted in mutual trust and presence More than just a parenting book, Out of Control is a wake-up call to all caregivers ready to parent through connection, not control. Dr. Shefali helps you develop the tools to foster growth, accountability, and wholeness--both in yourself and in your child. If you're ready to replace old habits with conscious choices and cultivate a more peaceful, fulfilling parenting journey, this book is for you.

lots of talk ... 2 1/2 stars
Whilst I agree in principle with the tenets behind this book, I have to say I find it very short on actual helpful strategies. You could jump to the last couple of chapters and glean the major messages of this book. Essentially stay calm, be patient and if you can't, walk away until you can. Give your children some love and let them talk and make sure you listen. "How to talk so your kids will listen..." Would be a better spend in my view, that gives some useful methods to actually use with your children. Also the age old phrase of "don't sweat the small stuff" could be applied and cover many pages of this tome...I do like the idea of not trying to project one's ideas onto your child this gets covered in great detail and will actually change the way I parent.

Let your child be heard and seen. Explosive meltdowns gone.
This was an incredible book for me. My son’s meltdowns were progressively getting more and more explosive. I had gotten this book when my kids were toddlers. During one of his meltdowns when I didn’t have a clue of how we got there…I grabbed the book. Looked in the table of contents for what I was seeing. Throwing, hitting…. Opened and quickly read the chapters. Low and behold, I had unconsciously screwed up. He was so frustrated and disconnected from not being heard. I fixed the situation at hand. And then consciously worked on myself moving forward. It was bumpy and messy. But the meltdowns decreased significantly and now they are not explosive. We talk about how we feel in the moment and my kiddo gets to voice his disdain for a situation with a safe adult. I highly recommend. I’m pretty sure it diverted us from and admission from day rehab. It was getting that scary.
