If at first the drive does not succeed....try again!!
The first drive that I received would take in discs and read them perfectly fine, but whenever I tried to eject the disc, the drive would sound like it made an attempt to and hit some sort of block and would reload the disc into the drive. At first I thought my DVD was a lost cause and was forever-eaten by the drive, however I discovered that if i tipped the drive upside down and tried to eject, the discs would come out!! Anyways, I didn't want to rely on doing that every time because 1. it isn't convenient/what I paid for and 2. risked damaging the disc/drive. I contacted the seller and they immediately shipped me a brand new drive that arrived a couple days later and works perfectly! Awesome work from the seller's end and greatly appreciated. 4/5 only due to the original faulty drive.

FINALLY, an external CD/DVD optical drive that works with a 2017 iMac!
FINALLY, an external CD/DVD optical drive that works with a 2017 iMac! I have returned other USB 3.0 burners with pop-out drawers to Amazon with much disappointment because, despite some glowing reviews, they just didn't work and were of questionable quality. BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE WITH THIS DRIVE!!! I have waited to write this review because my brand new iMac had a defective Thunderbolt port, and I couldn't test the drive properly (though, I suppose that I could have with the included USB-C to USB 3.0 adapter, but that wasn't the point). So, I have created both CD and a DVD from stuff in my library, and I have played them back, and it works like a charm. I got two in separate orders: one to try out to make sure that it worked, and the other once I was convinced that it was a winner. We have two new 2017 iMacs, one for me, and one for my spouse, and each of us now has one of these drives. When I took my iMac in for repair, along with the drive for testing of the Thunderbolt port after repair, the tech could not believe that this was not a genuine Apple drive.I'm hoping that these drives will keep on working and not die in a month or so, but from the quality feel of the drives, I believe that they will survive. The bonus gift of a 14-in-1 Multitool was the cherry on top of the sundae. High quality and much appreciated. Don't know if it is still being offered.

1 star review revised to 5 stars!
Note: What follows is my original review, which remains unchanged.I need this drive to burn dual layer DVDs and blank/rewrite CD-RWs. Unfortunately, it has failed me on both fronts. (Using k3b on Linux.) The drive makes some strange noises, before reporting an I/O error. I leave a 1-star review for now because it can't do what I need, but I don't mean for this to unduly reflect on the brand. It's entirely possible that the drive was damaged during shipping; the actuator is certainly making some weird noises. Defective hardware is sometimes just a fact of life. If the manufacturer honors the warranty and replaces the drive with a functional one, I will gladly revise this review to 5 stars.Update:I reported the device as non-functional; the seller promptly dispatched a replacement drive. I received the new drive before I even mailed back the old one. The faulty drive I originally received did render several dollars worth of dual layer DVDs unusable due to aborted writes, but this is forgivable. I am now happily burning rewritable, as well as dual layer, discs with k3b on Linux Mint.I originally gave this product a 1 star review; however I realize that sometimes computer components break. What really matters is how the seller handles the situation. This seller did exactly what a consumer would want; for this reason I have revised my review to 5 stars. 100% satisfied customer!

Defective on arrival
This drive was defective. It would not eject my DVD. There is no button or the normal hole for inserting a paperclip. It would make all the noises but the disk didn't come out.I resorted to banging it on the desk and the it ejected my disk. I inserted a blank disk and ejected it several times and it worked fine. I then put in a different movie DVD and it wouldn't eject either.More banging and I got my movie back. That was all the diagnosis this drive was going to get. It looks great. But eating DVDs is a big no-no.

simple
I really like the DVD drive. Now I can listen to my CDs on my MAC and load it to Itune music. As I mentioned it on the headline, it is simple- no instruction needed to operate it. Just plug in to Mac and it will automatic opens up. The Drive also comes with a nice case which makes it very fancy and safe to carry around.

Definitely plug and play on iMac
My setup is a 2017 iMac running macOS 10.14.5. With some testing using powered and unpowered USB3 hubs, I decided that the stable connection for my needs was the USB3 port on the back of the iMac (did work on a powered hub but my cat kept playing with it). Worked perfectly when recording DVDs using Toast 17(stop laughing) and playing DVDs with the new Apple DVD Player. Recording speeds hit 8x, which is twice as fast as older DVD recorders on USB2 ports.Had some questions with tech support and the responses was immediate. If I could rate this as 6 stars, I would.

Can burn CD
Many computers today have eliminated the ability to burn discs in order to be thinner. I burned hundreds of songs on my disc and used it on the car. My old Toyota doesn't have Bluetooth. I used to convert Bluetooth to the radio, and it's always easy to be disturbed by other signals. But the old Toyota has a CD player so I can listen to high-quality music. No longer have to endure unclear FM signals.

Not happy, at times a disk won't eject!
I really am not happy and this is the second USB-C Super Drive that I have ordered. First one from a different company but I swear they were made from the same company Neither drive has the small hole to eject and both had DVD's stuck in them shortly after using them. Took a techy to finally figure out a way to eject the disk. I am not a heavy user and this is just going to be a constant frustration. The drive didn't even show up on the desktop at times and even when it did and Itried to eject it it wouldn't eject. Very disappointed since i back up all my photos to DVD's and now I will have to use jump drives.

There is no eject button and it doesn’t always eject the disk when my iMac tells it to.
