Ginkgo, known as the Maidenhair Tree, is a unique tree that has been used as a food and in herbal medicine for over 4000 years. This hardy specimen is native to Asia but nowadays it is widely cultivated in North America, parts of Japan and Korea. Ginkgo is well known treatment in many ailments and has been used is traditional medicine for centuries. They are hardy in USDA zones 5-9 (up to -28˚ C; -20˚ F) Ginkgo trees are very large trees, normally reaching a height of 20-35 m (66-115 ft) but in cultivation they are cut back to grow as bonsai. They are great ornamental trees and add oriental accent to your garden! Young trees are often tall and slender, and sparsely branched; the crown becomes broader as the tree ages. During autumn, the leaves change colour and turn a bright yellow. Ginkgo is a relatively shade-intolerant species that (at least in cultivation) grows best in environments that are well-watered and well-drained. It grows best in sandy soils but can thrive in poor soil as well. Trees are usually deep rooted and resistant to wind and snow damage.
