'Special Edition'. Digitally remastered 20th Anniversary edition of the classic debut album from the Manchester quartet, originally released in 1989. Meshing simple, exceedingly catchy hooks with rhythmic beats, The Stones Roses led the UK's so-called Madchester scene straight into the U.S. with their eponymous debut. The Stone Roses achieved one of the most successful fusions of classic Pop songwriting and Acid House culture, and managed to snare fans from both genres. By the end of 1989, their debut landed on many Top Ten lists for that year. Though the band never realized the same triumphs on their second and final album, repercussions of their debut album's classic pop songwriting and bright riffs could be heard well into the next decade.

Holds up amazingly well, a classic
I bought this back when it was first released. Lost it somewhere in my shuffles of stuff/junk over the years. The re-release came up on my recommended list, and the price was great, so I picked it up.A true classic of it's time, and it holds up well. I listened to this album many times back in the day, and found I remembered it very well, even after not hearing it in quite a long time.A very complete record, I love all but 2 tracks on this album. And, after hearing it again, I still find that I like/dislike the same tracks. Guess it's just burned into my brain that way.My recommendation for Stone Roses fans is not to waste your money on the so called "hits" collections that are available. Get this album. If you love it enough, get Second Coming. And then you're done. There's a ton of other mixes and releases out there for the really hard-core fans, but for most people, the 2 albums are it.

Some very nice tunes
Most have heard I Wanna Be Adored - but there are many more outstanding songs on this release. Besides Adored, my other favorites are Waterfall, Don't Stop, (Song for my) Sugar Spun Sister, Shoot You Down and This Is The One.Not that the rest of the material is subpar or substandard - just that those are my favorites. I highly recommend this release.

How did I miss this gem when it came out....
... because it's a solid album through and through. Yes, the music and sound will come across feeling dated but so do The Doors, Beatles, Rolling Stones... etc. Good music lasts a very, very long time. This is very good Brit rock and roll w/ solid guitar work, rhythms and songs that will stick in your head.

Every bit as brilliant as you've heard
Everyone has their own Stone Roses story, and I am no different. I was only nine when this album came, and obviously was too busy with my Batman fetish to follow the Madchester scene. As a 14 year old alt-radio fan, I dug "Love Spreads," but assumed it was the work of minor, almost one-hit-wonder caliber band. Thus, I was caught by surprise when, in the course of reading up on the British scene throughout the '90s, I learned that these same Stone Roses were responsible for one of the most significant albums of the past 15 years. On reputation alone, I ordered the album, not having heard a single track. It is now among my 3 or 4 favorite albums. It is nothing short of magic."I Wanna Be Adored" is powerful enough to give me chills. It contains essentially one line, yet that line speaks volumes. "She Bangs the Drums" is typical Roses - the chorus is practically perfect. I dare you to try escaping the pure pop catchiness of "Elephant Stone." "Bye Bye Madman" features wonderfully subtle tempo changes. "Made of Stone" is both brutal and beautiful, again with a genius of a chorus. "This Is the Stone" is pure bliss. "I am the Resurrection" features a great build-up, followed by a wildly different jam session, yet closes the album perfectly. Included here also is the greatest white-boy funk song of all, "Fools Gold."This is the perfect album for a sunny summer day. If only I had been old enough in that glorious summer of 1989 to discover the magic firsthand. Buy this now and recreate your own Summer of Love.

Unbelievable and Mindblowing
Someone said it earlier and it is completely true - this album gets better and better after every listen. It is a truly rewarding experience to listen to this album, whether it is your first time or your hundredth (which I am approaching). As others have mentioned, this was the album that paved the way for Oasis, the Verve, Pulp (to a degree), Radiohead (also to a degree), Blur, and many other of the so-called "Brit Pop" bands."I Wanna Be Adored" may be the greatest opening track ever and then there is the sheer brilliance of "Waterfall" running into "Don't Stop" (they play a part of "Waterfall" backwards). Ian Brown, John Squire, Reni, and Mani came together one day and for that moment, they laid down some music that was never going to be equalled, no matter how hard they tried. "Second Coming" (which was a belated 5 year follow-up) is solid but no where near the album that "The Stone Roses" is. But how could it have been? "The Stone Roses" was an album to perfection.Everyone who is into rock music or just music period needs this album in your collection. You don't have a serious collection without this one. I own over 1100 CDs and if I had to choose 5 albums to save from a fire, this one is there along with "A Tribute to Jack Johnson" by Miles, "Ultimate Blue Train" by Coltrane, "Animals" by Pink Floyd, and "Disintegration" by The Cure. Buy it today if you don't own it already.

simply superb
Fortunately, I found this by surfing through the Amazon website. I read some of the reviews, heard the samples, looked over some critical reviews, and bought it. What a find! Up to four weeks ago I had never heard of this group, let alone the album. Having listened to it five or six times I am convinced that there is no weak song here. The music is melodic, inventive, fun, complex, and diverse. With so magnificent a start, one wonders what mountains the group would have climbed had they remained together. This may be the best first album ever. The group is wholly self-assured and rightly so - their craftsmanship leads nothing to be desired. One of the few albums I wish were longer. You will not regret purchasing this work of genius.

Just an awesome and influential album - you'll most likely love this!
The Stones Roses were innovative because they fused guitar-pop with dance and rave music. Every song here is good-if-not great, and there's even a couple classics scattered about (the hit "She Bangs The Drum" and "I Wanna Be Adored" are some). Singer Ian Brown perfectly fits the lyrics as I can't see how anybody won't like him. The lyrics are always catchy and are very much worthy of close inspection. The instrumentation is also fantastic - it's all very creative, fun and distinctively Stone Roses - they definitely have their own sound. It sounds just a tad dated, but I don't think most people will care in the end. All things aside, I'm pretty confident that pop rock and 80's rock fans will definitely love this album (along with most other people)! HIGHLY recommended!Highlights include:the entire album!

I Wanna Be Outdoors
Oh, hello. Don’t mind me I was just putting some sellotape on the children’s bedroom doors, to make sure they’re absolutely safely sealed in there away from the new ‘Big C’, as I am calling it, if quietly and only to myslef. Jonty, my eldest, isn’t too bad, too annoying, I mean, though I imagine that even were I sequestered here with Bo Derek she might eventually begin to grate on my nerves (though I’d be willing to give it a try!), but then again he is twenty-seven! It’s little Jacintha (18) that’s the problem (apart from the wife, of course, Janet, but she does one’s nut at the best of times, what with her voice, her incessant chuntering, her face, her taste in clothes, her ‘cooking’, I could go on...). The foolish child insists on reading aloud, playing musical instruments, singing, attempting to sit in one’s lap when one is attempting to read an online article on one’s smartphone or some suchlike task. The sorry thing is I think she thinks she’s bucking us all up or something, easing our collective passage through dark times or some other such nonsense, but to be perfectly frank she’s driving me up the wall. Thus, I’ve been buying one or two CDs from earlier, if not happier then easier, lonelier times. My student days, that is. I had my digs all to myself after the first year, once my fellows had turned against me, that is, the cretins. I suppose they felt intellectually threatened in my company, their shortcomings were all too apparent, and it was easier to run away, to band together in mediocrity, than to recognise their failings and actually address them. Anyway, their loss was my gain, as I was free to spend my time outside lectures studying and listening to the latest sounds, some of which were contained on the present ablum. They were going to take the world by storm weren’t they, The Stone Roses, but then, weren’t we all?

Album 5* Pressing - Poor
I am currently being all the albums that have had an impact on me over the course of my life. This particular album is one such album. To have been there when this was released, eagerly awaiting the record shop to open so I could buy it etc. This had a massive impact and probably shaped (in some ways) the person I am now. Nuff said about the album, you know the story...Sadly, the pressing I received is all pop and hisses, it is not my setup that's for sure as none of my other vinyl plays as badly as this, I done the usual prior to the first play, cleaned with a lint free cloth and cleared the static but I was really surprised how much noise there was. Not wanting to give up I let it play through and it wasn't just the extra noise but also the quality of the music/sound. Real shame, I am considering sending it back for a replacement as I am sure mine is cream crackered.

This IS the one
I remember buying this 11 years ago, as it was 20 years anniversary, now 31 years since release and probably still one of the albums of the last 50 years. Fact. It comes in a nice large presentation box inside you get 4 cd's, 4 12" vinyl, and a lemon shaped USB stick. All these contain the entire back catalogue from the entire Silvertone archives. All presented in glorious gatefold with added art prints that were included with all the 12" presses at the time. All the vinyls are on really fat 180gsm vinyl too. Back in the day when I dj'ed Silvertone vinyls were always pressed good quality and loud, no loss of volume in sound compression unlike others at that time. Here is an official summary of what you get...In August 2009, marking the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the release of the legendary eponymous debut album by The Stone Roses, Sony Music release the definitive super deluxe limited edition collectors boxset. The Stone Roses at their most powerful, and majestic best!
What can be said about this album...well its joint with The Clash album 'London Calling' as my favourite album of all time. The songs are completely timeless. From the opening bars of 'I wanna be adored' right through to the blistering finale of 'I am the resurrection', this album oozes genius. The songwriting of Brown and Squire has never been bettered than here ( okay, they wrote some genius B sides too, and a half hearted second album). I seriously play this album at least once a week - it's become a ritual. If you have never heard this album, I strongly urge you to, if you already love this album the way I do, then you will know what I'm talking about!!

Brilliant music, poor pressing, Sony should be ashamed, but ££££££talks.
Made in the EU, cover and inner sleeve fine.Vinyl as has been said was quite dirty/dusty. Also some strange swirl marks on the vinyl surface as if someone tried to polish and buff it up (with the sole of their shoes)! They are there for good I'm afraid. Record itself is flat and although a few snaps and crackles plays fine. Volume has to be turned up its a very quiet pressing but then you get all the attendant hiss and background hum so its not a clean sound at all. First side 22 minutes, second side 46 minutes.Still after 25 years you can't really expect Sony to bother to get it right can you!?180g still don't see the point apart from making the floor joists bend a bit more.Overall happy to have a vinyl version of this great album as I didn't get it first time around but as Sony don't have to pay for recording a new album it would be nice if they could pay more attention to the actual quality and sonics of the pressing.Well worth £9 of anyone's money, unfortunately it cost a lot more than that! The CD sounds much better but its nice to have the vinyl. Excuse my contradictory review. Just played an original King Crimson LP from 1970 and its hugely better sonically and volume to background noise ratio as in there isn't any.
