The Mixing Engineer's Handbook, Second Edition

Overall, a Great Book to Own
I have some similar books in this genre, and I am getting the most use out of this one. It not only contains the general "rules of thumb", but it gets much more specific about things you can try in terms of recording, mixing, effects, etc. This book drove home the point about how important it is to have proper EQ, so that each instrument has a place to "sit" in the frequency spectrum. It covers compressors in a much more practical way than some other books, giving you some really nice tips on how to get a great vocal.I love the chapter on effects, and especially the specific tips on layering reverbs. And then there are the interviews which really show you how much work and technique the pros are using that the average home enthusiast is not. Those interviews woke me up and let me know that I'm going to have to get a lot better and work a lot harder to create the same quality as the pros. The information on file formats is very good too. I had no idea that MP3 files had so many drawbacks and were so touchy.Only the most minor annoyances keep this book from being a pillar of magnificent writing. I would like to see the names of the equipment being constantly mentioned get fully-worded, rather than just slinging out terms like "808". (That's some type of Roland drum-machine the best I can tell.) In other words, instead of saying "LA2A", give the brand-name, the model number, and what kind of gear it really is so that a beginning reader can follow along better. The bottom line is that this book will make you better and give you a lot more knowledge than you probably had if you're trying to learn proper mixing.

Most Helpful and Informative Mixing Book I've Ever Read (and still read!)
The most concise and to the point book on Mixing I have ever read. I bought the first edition and I have worn it out. It is filled with interviews by all the heavy hitters in the industry, past to present. Those interviews are worth the price of the book, alone. It is filled with every tip and technique needed to properly apply EQ and Effects. Reverbs and Delays were always a problem for me, as I used them by ear. Bobby shows you how to time your reverbs and delays to the timing of the track to get a professional sounding end product. Learn the 6 most important elements of a successful Mix. Learn how to use multiple reverbs, delays and Modulation fx such as chorus. Anything that can arise in a mix is addressed in The Mixing Engineer's Handbook. I encourage you to take a look at some of the free chapters by clicking the "Look Inside" link on the Product Picture. Anybody who is serious about mixing should own this book. Also, take a look at Bobby's other books. They are All Gems.

Intimidating at first but actually starts with some great beginner knowledge
When I first received this in the mail, based on it's weight and thickness, I though I might have made a mistake! I am a beginner at sound engineering so I thought I might have jumped the gun when getting something as advanced as this. But, actually, it starts from the beginning and get's you up to speed rather fast with some really great knowledge. I am still working my way through it but enjoying it immensely. I do have my own video production company and have gone quiet far at that, so I am not a stranger to how advanced and technical things can get. I feel confident in saying this book still offers a lot for someone who has been doing their own recording for a while and also helps point out how much a novice you might find yourself in a knowledge base of certain areas.

Useful
This book introduced me to important concepts about audio engineering and extended my knowledge on others. It's good for the home studio engineer. For more detailed information, get another book.

AWESOME instructional book, a must for sound composers and engineers!
I bought this book for a class in sound and recording expecting a heavy-handed textbook that would wear me down with useless knowledge, impossible-to-remember charts of decibel levels, and very few actual mixing tips. But I was pleasantly wrong! I've never before encountered a text that describes as succintly and clearly the steps to mixing and remixing sounds and music in such an approachable fashion! I would recommend this both for beginners who want to get into sound and music editing as well as hardcore remixers who think they're know what theyre doing but could use a refresher on the basics. A stable of a good mixing library!

Excellent for the audiophile
As an audiophile I truly enjoyed the book. It gave me clear and usable insight into why some of my recordings sound the way they do. It also allowed me to very quickly criticize some of my not so professionally mixed music. This includes classic and pro brands like "Deutsche gramophone and London" that you would expect to be top notch. They are not always perfect. For the professional it gives the philosophy of the professional mixers without much detail.

outstanding audio book
Owsinski does a great job providing useful mixing info from his own background as well as that from notable engineers. He covers a lot of bases in this book that opened up my eyes or rather, ears. The best part is the dialogue from all the notable engineers he interviewed and how they would approach different mix issues. Looking at their backgrounds can give some insight to why they may make certain mixing decisions/suggestions. Must have book.

Molti spunti...
Si, molti spunti per la seconda edizione di questa "classica" pubblicazione. Trattandosi di mixing audio è da non prendere come Bibbia dogmatica assoluta: meglio come guida!

A classic textbook
One of the books to buy if you want to understand this subject. About half of the book contains chapters detailing the techniques necessary to understand how to mix sound, but the second half contains interviews with some industry experts who give you the fruits of their experience. For a subject that is more practical than theoretical, you will probably want to buy more than one book about mixing, but this one should be included.

Als perfekte Ergänzung zu diesem Buch empfehle ich Bob Katz's "Mastering Audio - the art and the science". In diesen beiden Büchern steckt alles, was man als Audio-Profi wissen sollte - wissen muss! Also zugreifen und lernen, lernen, lernen....
