Developing Jazz technique
I had rather hoped that John O Neill might have produced his 2 nd saxophone book as a continuation of his excellent first book which I have taught from since 1991 when it first came out.The second book ; Developing Jazz Technique is like the first book in that it is available for either alto or tenor saxophones. The CDs are of excellent quality and the and the playing superb. The book is rather like a mini encyclopedia. Mr O neill devlops ides for improvisation throughout the book. He dicusses subtone/various effects/vibrato/study of overtones various "jazz" modes and scales and many other important techniques. I would encourage every advancing saxophone players to have it on there music shelf. The musical pieces and examples need to be used in conjunction with the fine notes at the back of the book. This scholarly book(although I am reluctant to use this word in case it puts some saxophonists off)is in the form of a work book which you will probably not play through in one go as it were, but the serious student will be constantly returning to it.I also like the spirally bound format which stops the book closing on the stand: a very practical idea.John ONeill's First book has been the backbone of my own jazz saxophone teaching since it came out some donzen years ago(also books for Jazz clarinet/flute and trumpet as far as I am aware)New book is also highly recommended and shoud be in every aspiring jazz musician's library.Mr Oneill and his publisher, Schotts are to be congratulatedVery highly recommended.
